Gr 4-6–In this sequel to George Washington's Socks (Scholastic, 1991), the members of the Adventure Club are again transported by rowboat back in time to the American Revolution where 10-year-old Matt and the other boys get caught up in a Patriot spy ring while his younger sister and her friends are rescued by a Loyalist family. The boys are immediately sympathetic to the Patriot cause and agree to help deliver a message concerning the Battle of Dorchester, which they also happen to be learning about in school at the beginning of the story. The girls, on the other hand, are horrified to be staying with “the enemy,” but who is right and who is wrong becomes more complex as the story unfolds. The kids witness the Patriots doing terrible things to the Loyalists and realize that the Torys have reasons for staying loyal to England. Woodruff does an excellent job of conveying the complexities of war, particularly one that pits family against family in a very real way. This is a great introduction to the Revolutionary period, brought to life with historical figures and conflicts through the eyes of today's kids. fun time travel story for 8-12 year olds

Looking for exciting time travel books for your young patrons or students who've read their way through the Magic Tree House, the Time Warp Trio, and others series of that ilk? Elvira Woodruff's George Washington's Spy might just fit the bill for these readers. A magic rowboat at a lake near their home sweeps fifth grader Matt, his annoying little sister Katie, and four friends from their Nebraska home back to 1776 Boston, where they land in a freezing and dark forest and their magic boat quickly disappears. It's a dangerous time, with the British in Boston and George Washington and his troops trying to drive the British from the city.

The boys go to look for help for Katie, who has injured her foot, while the girls remain behind, but with the freezing weather, they must seek shelter when the boys do not quickly come back for them. They are fortunate to be taken in by a kind woman, Mistress Hewson, and her young daughters, who, through a series of funny misunderstandings, believe that the girls are related to the British Earl of Essex. They take the three girls into their home, where they try to blend in by acting "colonial." They soon discover that the family who is so kind to them is a Loyalist family--enemies of George Washington and the Patriots!

And what has become of Matt and his friends? They've been taken prisoner by a group of Patriots, where they meet Benjamin Franklin, and Matt is drawn into George Washington's spy network, complete with letters written in invisible ink, messages hidden in buttons and secret passwords. Can Washington make the British Redcoats leave Boston, and will Matt, Katie, and their friends ever get back home?

The author does not shirk from exploring the complex politics of the time, when even Benjamin Franklin's own family was split, with his son siding with the Tories and the King. Everything is not black and white, like the children thought from history class. Mistress Hewson "may have been a Tory, but she acted like any other mother." At the book's conclusion, the children ponder the moral complexities of the Revolution, wondering how good people like the Hewsons could be America's enemies. "I thought choosing sides would be so simple, but it's not," remarks one of the girls.

While this title is a sequel to Woodruff's George Washington's Socks, there's no problem reading this one without having read the earlier book. I particularly enjoyed how Woodruff weaves real historical figures into the story, including Washington (who makes a brief appearance toward the end) and Franklin. In addition to offering plenty of suspense and adventure, the author fills her book with plenty of humorous details, such as the kids' repeated tries to get their cell phones to work in 1776 (out of range and no signal light up on the phone), their cravings for pizza, chocolate, and marshmallows, Benjamin Franklin trading his boots, with buckles made by Paul Revere, for the sneakers of one of the time-travelers, and the Hewson girls' fascination with nail polish and underpants, But in addition to humor, we also see the harshness of the times, with prisoners in the stocks, smallpox epidemics, public floggings, a character being tarred and feathered, while another is hung for treason by the British.

Author's notes provide historical details on a number of topics, including Loyalists, colonial spies, and the Battle of Dorchester. The book also includes a glossary of revolutionary-war vocabulary used in the book, as well as a brief bibliography.

This book would be an excellent choice for students interested in history, adventure stories, or time travel. I can also imagine this book as a very fun and engaging read-aloud for teachers to use in the classroom. Also, this book would be appropriate for children who are younger than 8 but who are advanced readers for their age. And at 229 pages, this novel won't intimidate reluctant readers.

At the beginning it is horrible then once they go back in time it gets a lot better because they were in Boston not playing with MARSHMALLOWS! Overall this is a great and fun book!!

Chops builder master class

This book is a great resource for licks and chops. The tabs for the songs look spot on but even if you aren't the biggest Petrucci fan, this is great for learning all kinds of licks and such to your arsenal. Whether you want to learn great exercises for alternate picking, sweeps, legato runs, modes, blues, great rhythm and chord work, its all there! Even 7 string stuff. He goes all over the fretboard and has something in there everyone can learn from. This is all instrumental, no vocals. Amazing stuff. The tabs are easy to read and understand what is going on, now actually playing it will take some serious effort and practice but this is a great way to improve upon these techniques, in the context of a song and can replace many lesson programs out there.

John Petrucci is a master and this book highlights many techniques that can be used in many different styles. If you want to learn some impressive sweeps, legato runs, string skipping and killer alternate picking you need this. But this can help with the rhythm also. And it is not just playing as fast as you can on each song, many slower, soulful, tasteful stuff there that can inspire your own playing or give you some chops that will impress your audience. Many exercises here that can improve your speed and good for warm ups as well. And he has some really cool heavy stuff here that other instrumental artists don't do (Satriani, Vai). Petrucci is the heaviest shredder out there. But a very diverse album, very underrated album.

Amazing resource, buy it.

Accurate and quality guitar tabs

Great book! Everything seems spot on, and the tab fingerings and positions seem correct. Sometimes you have these guys that tab out books, and the way the tab the fingerings and hand positioning makes it near impossible to play up to speed! Not on this book though. The tab is done in such a way to facilitate the technical passages. Highly recommended.

playing my favorite tracks from 2005

suspended animation was one of my favorite CDs through high school, and afaik this tab book seems to be pretty accurate. rather than going for arrangements that force several guitars into fewer tracks, i believe most everything is tracked pretty accurately with as many instruments as needed. this is most easily seen in Wishful Thinking, which is a rather slow track but uses a lot of layers to sound full and complex.
I haven't studied Petrucci's playing in video that much so I cannot make too much comment about whether or not the tabs are wrong, but at least the notes sound more or less correct to me on Glasgow Kiss, Damage Control and Jaws of Life, as those are the tracks i've been concentrating on the most.

I just couldn't find it easy to learn from

It was the required text for class, I just couldn't find it easy to learn from. Embryology isn't my favorite subject but I prefer Langman's Langman's Medical Embryology That being said I'm sure someone could find it useful as a reference tool but as for me it was off my ipad as soon as the course was over.

About the Author
Camillo Boito (1836-1914) became Professor of Architecture at the Accademia delle Belle Arti while only 19 before moving to Milan to be Professor of Architecture at the Accademia di Brera. Most of his work as an architect was in restoring major buildings to their former glory. He wrote only 17 novelle which were published in periodicals but later published in two volumes in 1876 and 1883. The Dedalus collection Senso (and other stories) is a selection from these two volumes. Boito's brother, Arrigo was a notable poet and Verdi's librettist for Otello and Falstaff.

Christine Donougher was born in England in 1954. She read English and French at Cambridge and after a career in publishing is now a freelance translator and editor. Her translation of The Book of Nights won the 1992 Scott Moncrieff Translation Prize. Her translations from French for Dedalus are: 7 novels by Sylvie Germain, The Book of Nights, Night of Amber, Days of Anger,The Book of Tobias, Invitation to a Journey, The Song of False Lovers and Magnus, Enigma by Rezvani, The Experience of the Night by Marcel Bealu, Le Calvaire by Octave Mirbeau, Tales from the Saragossa Manuscript by Jan Potocki,The Land of Darkness by Daniel Arsand and Paris Noir by Jacques Yonnet. Excellent choice for business analysts that want a brief exposure with case studies (and software)

I am a data mining trainer and consultant. This book not only has good content, but it offers a 90 day license of software with which to rehearse the case study examples. My comments on the book will be accompanied by comments on the software. The book is the perfect fit for its intended audience. With the caution that certain readers will do better elsewhere, I think it is a great book. The major topics are addressed, albeit briefly, with clarity. If you are a first timer reader of this subject, there are not many books that will do a better job explaining these technical subjects for a general audience.

Like most full time data miners, I would have difficulty living within the constraints of Excel. XLMiner is a fine piece of software, but it lives inside Excel as an Excel add-on. The most famous limitation is having no more than 1,000,000 rows of data, but that nature of that limitation applied to Data Mining is frequently misunderstood. I am often on projects with "big data" clients where I only model 100,000 or fewer records. XLMiner allows you to read from a database larger than Excel can handle, and let's you write out to a database larger than Excel can handle. I was surprised and impressed by this. In the end, though, it still isn't enough. I need to be able to merge and manipulate my large data files so that I can carefully select the smaller fraction that I am going to model. In short, I can't live without my more powerful tools. There is an essay offered as a sidebar in the book on the state of the Data Mining Software Tools market by Herb Edelstein which discusses exactly this fact. XLMiner was originally developed as a piece of teaching software, and it excels at that. It doesn't intend to be a deployment tool for the whole business enterprise like some of the more powerful Data Mining suites. If you don't have access to such tools you might be pleasantly surprised what it can do since the other tools are many times more expensive.

Despite this limitation, this is a strong book. It would be just perfect for MBAs that are intrigued with Data Mining. It would be great for a first course in Data Mining provided that it wasn't the first of many. If someone were about to embark on a Data Mining advanced degree, I don't think this book is the best route to go. I would suggest Handbook of Statistical Analysis and Data Mining Applications as an introduction for that audience. I also think it is an outstanding choice for a seminar leader that wants to offer demonstrations for the audience. I would suggest providing the audience with copies (or allowing them to get them). What a great way to learn the material - by doing. I debated using this book for exactly that purpose and ended up going with the Handbook of Statistical Analysis and Data Mining Applications only because I felt my audience, representing larger companies, would end up using one the Data Mining suites in the end, and I wanted them to see them.

I would also suggest this book for self study. It is as easy a read as this kind of material is going to get. Technical? Yes. Light reading? Not really. However, Data Mining algorithms never make for light reading. What you hope for is clarity, and the right amount of detail. For the uninitiated, this is perfect. For Data Mining professionals, it would be just a very basic review. Some reviewers seems to have found it a tough slog. It is very much in the style of "here is the rough idea - try a case study". If you've never studied statistics, there is no careful walk through of the formulas, but that is not the point of the book. Lots of other books do that. If you want to know how Data Mining works "under the hood" you won't really find that here either. For example, Regression is covered in about 15 pages. Overall, I think it makes good choices in terms of detail.

It covers all the material you need in an introduction. It offers a very brief initial chapter defining the subject. It does a decent job at data visualization. It is a basic introduction the algorithms with supporting case studies. The is almost no data preparation because XLMiner is not designed to do any heavy lifting here. It can do partitioning and explains why this is critical to data mining. For a good discussion of data preparation and Excel read Linoff's fine book Data Analysis Using SQL and Excel. A surprising number of the famous techniques are here: neural nets, k nearest neighbors, clustering, classification trees and even time series analysis. The case studies are fairly basic, but well described. They are easy to download from the website. Again, perfect for a first course in Data Mining. Everything an instructor would need for a good solid introduction - exactly the audience the book was written for.

Needs Serious Instructor Guidance

This book IS NOT for those who want to learn on their own. While this book does try to engage the learner by offering examples using storytelling, it fails on an instructional level. It doesn't fully explain the when or why behind the theory or application of data mining, and each aspect of it. It includes many equations that it just expects people to know. If you do know know orthogonal equations or linear regression by heart, this book will throw you for a loop.

I am taking an online class using this book, and I am ready to tear my hair out. Right now I am searching for books online to supplement my learning. If I find a better book, I will definitely add it to my post.

Save Your 99 cents

This short story took about 5 minutes to read. It's a prequel to Debbie Macomber's new book. She should have done with Jennifer Weiner did with Swim and The Next Best Thing, have the short story free to get people excited for the main novel. This short story that I spent 99 cents on left me feeling ripped off and the probablity of me buying the book that goes with this story is very low.

Also, I don't think that by not reading this story you are at a disadvantage. I would bet that this whole story will be summarized in The Inn at Rose Harbor.
