The Party: The Secret World of China’s Communist Rulers, by Richard McGregor

“Few outsiders have any realistic sense of the innards, motives, rivalries, and fears of the Chinese Communist leadership. But we all know much more than before, thanks to Richard McGregor’s illuminating and richly-textured look at the people in charge of China’s political machinery.... Invaluable.” — James Fallows, National Correspondent for The Atlantic

The Party is Financial Times reporter Richard McGregor’s eye-opening investigation into China’s Communist Party, and the integral role it has played in the country’s rise as a global superpower and rival to the United States. Many books have examined China’s economic rise, human rights record, turbulent history, and relations with the U.S.; none until now, however, have tackled the issue central to understanding all of these issues: how the ruling communist government works. The Party delves deeply into China’s secretive political machine.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. McGregor, a journalist at the Financial Times, begins his revelatory and scrupulously reported book with a provocative comparison between China™s Communist Party and the Vatican for their shared cultures of secrecy, pervasive influence, and impenetrability. The author pulls back the curtain on the Party to consider its influence over the industrial economy, military, and local governments. McGregor describes a system operating on a Leninist blueprint and deeply at odds with Western standards of management and transparency. Corruption and the tension between decentralization and national control are recurring themes--and are highlighted in the Party™s handling of the disturbing Sanlu case, in which thousands of babies were poisoned by contaminated milk powder. McGregor makes a clear and convincing case that the 1989 backlash against the Party, inexorable globalization, and technological innovations in communication have made it incumbent on the Party to evolve, and this smart, authoritative book provides valuable insight into how it has--and has not--met the challenge.

From the Back Cover

In this provocative and illuminating account, Richard McGregor offers a captivating portrait of China’s Communist Party, its grip on power and control over China, and its future.

China’s political and economic growth in the past three decades has been one of astonishing, epochal dimensions. The most remarkable part of this transformation, however, has been left largely untold—the central role of the Chinese Communist Party. In The Party, Richard McGregor delves deeply into China’s inner sanctum for the first time, showing how the Communist Party controls the government, courts, media, and military and keeps all corruption accusations against its members in-house. The Party’s decisions have a global impact, yet the CCP remains a deeply secretive body, hostile to the law and unaccountable to anyone or anything other than its own internal tribunals. It is the world’s only geopolitical rival of the United States, and is primed to think the worst of the West.

A fascinating, informative look at the organism that controls one quarter of the world's population
By Amazon Customer
Through a series of anecdotes and interviews, largely drawn from his eight years in China as correspondent for 'The Financial Times', Richard McGregor illustrates 'the Party', a remarkable social organization which subordinates 1.3 billion people.

It is a journalist's treatment rather than academic, so instead of explicitly offering analysis, Richard McGregor lets his interviews and stories largely speak for themselves. This provides a range of interesting characters, quotes and anecdotes. However, a side-effect is that many remarkable insights are either buried innocuously in the text or left to the reader's inference. The story is no less fascinating for it.

The picture that emerges is of a creative, adaptable, self-aware and resilient social network. Made up of 75 million party members, one in twelve adult Chinese, this self-perpetuating elite has no legal form beyond a mention in the preamble to China's constitution. The party exists outside the regular state apparatus and operates like a controller chip grafted into China's governing structures through party cells throughout government, the military, public companies and even private firms.

Grounded in its near ubiquitous presence in the state, military, public and private spheres, the Party maintains its grip via a number of interconnected and synergistic processes. Its personnel system allows any individual to be replaced, transferred or expelled at the will of the organism. Party control of the military provides ultimate coercive sanction. The Party's discipline system places members above the law even as it strengthens Party control of the behaviour of its members. The propaganda department uses sophisticated story telling to sculpt the narrative around events to conform to the Party's best interests.

Few join the party for ideological reasons. Rather, achieving party status is to gain membership into an elite club which, provided you stay within its unwritten bounds and contribute to the goals of the organism, gives a member a form of immunity from the law and other powers and abilities not available to the average citizen. In the corruption that is endemic in the system, everyone is guilty of something serious - from taking bribes, to tax evasion to sexual impropriety to failing to get proper permits. Members that stray out of bounds need not be punished for the real fault, but instead for one of the many more routine transgressions that hang over the heads of almost all party members. Were one not able to normally get away with routine transgressions, there would be little benefit to party membership. Yet simply knowing that straying too far will result in being punished for something entirely different is enough to self-censor unwanted behaviours, in particular the unwritten ones.

Self-reflexive and analytic, the party is alert to the internal and external dangers it faces and has proven able to respond to challenge with remarkable agility, creativity and effectiveness.

Though the book is very much about the Party at present, in 2010, glimpses of party history serve to illustrate the nature of the organism and its ability to adapt and reinvent itself.

For example, Richard McGregor declares a historic milestone the Party's peaceful and administrative transfer of power in 2002 to a new top grouping of apparatchiks. For the first time in over 2000 years of Chinese history, China was no longer ruled by a single individual seen as a sort of a god. Instead, the apex of China became a committee atop an organism which permeates into the whole society, with the next shifting of interchangable personalities at the top scheduled for 2012.

In 1992, only ten years prior to the 2002 milestone, again demonstrating forward looking pragmatic realism, the party transformed itself on entrepreneurs - the most extreme enemies of communism - not just by allowing them to join the party, but by actively recruiting them. Binding China's rapidly emerging entrepreneurial elites to the party provided benefits to both sides, allowing entrepreneurs more freedom from the stultifying strictures of dysfunctional state bureaucracy while reinforcing and renewing Party control on an element of Chinese society that may have come to threaten the Party's very existence.

Prior to that, the shock of Tiananmen square and the fall of the former Soviet Bloc caused a wave of realistic threat assessment and self-reflection within the Party. This lead to further creative and pragmatic changes, though not in the ways that analysts in the west might have guessed or hoped for.

Given the importance of the Party in China and the growing importance of China in the world, it behooves us to better understand it. Richard McGregor's fascinating and informative book is recommended reading for those interested in understanding not just the Party, but the modern China within which it operates.

Welcome to the Party
By M. G. Zink
I spent the last four years living in China, serving as the president of a Chinese bank. That role took me to 44 cities all across China, where I met hundreds of government officials and Party members. I worked daily with the General Secretary of the bank's Party Committee. During my time in China I read every major book by any foreigner who had lived and worked in China. Richard's book, The Party, is the most insightful book I have encountered. If you wish to understand how China is run today and you only have time to read one book, then read this one.

Interesting stories but not particularly cohesive
By Robert
I enjoyed reading this book. I learned a lot about China and a lot about the impact of the Communist party since it took power in 1949 (?). But I was ultimately unsatisfied for 2 reasons:

One, it felt more like a collection of interesting stories and less like a coherent book. The stories of particular episodes in China did not seem to follow any time line or any other organizational structure. I struggled to understand how the stories related to each other or whatever connections were implied. The stories seemed to jump between periods in China that didn't make any sense to me. That said, each episode was interesting and educational.

Two, I kept expecting for the author to explain to the reader why China is thriving. He provides a wealth of details about how corrupt the system is from the highest levels in Beijing to the lowest levels in each town/province/whatever. He details how "the party" influences almost every economic decision that gets made. He makes various statements about how this or that leader opened up China to market reforms and private property rights but in the same breath details how government at every level influences decisions. I walked away from this book still scratching my head as to how China has grown in the past 30-ish years. I'm still trying to figure that out.

Read this book for interesting insights into China over the past 60 years. But don't expect to have any better understanding of the big picture.

An excellent car worth an excellent book.
By E. Vervoort
This is certainly not one of those one model type of books that is based mainly on material from the standard press kits. On the contrary: written by John McCormick, a notable automotive journalist (CAR, Auto Week, Ward's Auto World), this book tells the complete story about the development of the Evoq prototype from 1999 into the production XLR as introduced in 2003. The XLR, already shown to the press at a preview at Pebble Beach 2000, was the first of the `Art and Science' style vehicles for Cadillac and presented a major `break through' for this American marque. Stylish, luxurious and sophisticated with lots of technical wizardry it received an enthusiastic reception by most of the American as well as the European press. Such a car, meant to revive the Cadillac brand, is certainly worth a book, and it's a good one. It is well written with excellent detail and beautiful photographs, on 128 pages of high-quality paper, including short interviews with the major players in the design, development and production stages of the XLR and these dedicated people are honest and open enough to not hide the problems and the issues they were facing during this challenging process. But they managed to meet those challenges and introduce a real beautiful car giving Cadillac a totally new design vocabulary which can carry them through for the next 10 years or more.

Chapters are well spread over Driving (a test drive by Andrew Frankel), Renaissance (the new Brand philosophy), Design (from Evoq to XLR), Engineering (testing at the Nürburgring), Interior (Bulgari and Eucalyptus wood) and Marketing and each of them give lots of detail. I really enjoyed every page of it. It is a valuable addition to anyone's library who is interested in American cars but for Cadillac enthusiasts it's a must! A most welcome tribute to a daring Cadillac design statement.

Achilles in Vietnam: Combat Trauma and the Undoing of Character, by Jonathan Shay

An original and groundbreaking book that examines the psychological devastation of war by comparing the soldiers of Homer’s Iliad with Vietnam veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder

In this strikingly original and groundbreaking book, Dr. Shay examines the psychological devastation of war by comparing the soldiers of Homer’s Iliad with Vietnam veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. Although the Iliad was written twenty-seven centuries ago it has much to teach about combat trauma, as do the more recent, compelling voices and experiences of Vietnam vets.

Amazon.com Review
Shay works from an intriguing premise: that the study of the great Homeric epic of war, The Iliad, can illuminate our understanding of Vietnam, and vice versa. Along the way, he compares the battlefield experiences of men like Agamemnon and Patroclus with those of frontline grunts, analyzes the berserker rage that overcame Achilles and so many American soldiers alike, and considers the ways in which societies ancient and modern have accounted for and dealt with post-traumatic stress disorder---a malady only recently recognized in the medical literature, but well attested in Homer's pages. The novelist Tim O'Brien, who has written so affectingly about his experiences in combat, calls Shay's book "one of the most original and most important scholarly works to have emerged from the Vietnam war." He's right.

From Publishers Weekly
Shay is a psychiatrist specializing in treating Vietnam veterans with chronic post-traumatic stress syndrome. In this provocative monograph, he relates their experiences to Homer's portrait of Achilles in The Illiad. War, he argues, generates rage because of its intrinsic unfairness. Only one's special comrades can be trusted. The death of Patroklos drove Achilles first into passionate grief, then into berserk wrath. Shay establishes convincing parallels to combat in Vietnam, where the war was considered meaningless and mourning for dead friends was thwarted by an indifferent command structure. He convincingly recommends policies of unit rotation and unit "griefwork"--official recognition of combat losses--as keys to sustaining what he calls a moral existence during war's human encounters. The alternatives are unrestrained revenge-driven behavior, endless reliving of the guilt such behavior causes and the ruin of good character. Shay's ideas merit attention by soldiers and scholars alike.

From Library Journal
Narratives from Vietnam veterans, excerpts from Homer's Iliad, and quotes from the Bible are here used to compare combat during the Vietnam War and the time of the Iliad, providing a scholarly book about post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It is estimated that a quarter of a million Vietnam veterans suffer from PTSD today. Although this work will be a bit difficult for those not versed in Homer's epic poem, the comparisons vividly show the effects of PTSD. For serious researchers on the psychology of PTSD, this book provides an intriguing approach. Educated lay readers, students, and scholars interested in the Vietnam war will want to consider this extraordinary perspective on the problem of PTSD. Recommended for serious psychology and literature collections.

The Commonality of the Combat Soldier
By Steve Banko, Duffysboss@aol.com
As a Vietnam combat veteran, I was imbued with the belief that my war was "special," a unique experience in the world's military history. In reading Dr. Shay's book, I had to re-think that thesis and am now struck with the obvious conclusion that all combat, be it with Alexander the Great or Gen. Norman Schwartzkopf, inflicts psychological damage that can last a lifetime. Only geography changes.
Realizing that and reading the vast parallels between The Iliad and Vietnam PTSD symptomology, I was able to understand my own emotional scars and through that self-realization, truly begin to heal those scars. I referred my therapist to the book and she told me it offered her more insight into the cause and treatment of PTSD among Vietnam veterans than any of the seminars or textbooks she'd ever encountered. This is a must read for Vietnam vets and those who care about them.

We are not alone.
By A.
As a Marine recently returned from his second combat tour in Iraq, I have found this book to be immensely helpful in understanding the changes that have taken place in my life as a result of traumatic experience. While the vietnam war may be 30 years gone, the lessons of those who have experienced war first hand are as timeless and relevant today as they ever were.

Odysseus cried...
By Douglas Todd
In "Healing and Tragedy" (Chapter 11) Shay says that "Healing is done by survivors, not to survivors" and he is right. He also speaks of the healing power of narrative and says, "The ancient Greeks revered Homer, the singer of tales, as a doctor of the soul. In the Odyssey, Homer paints a (self-)portrait of the epic singer whose healing art is to tell the stories of Troy with the truth that causes the old soldier, Odysseus, to weep and weep again. (Odyssey 8:78ff)"
Something like that seems to happen to Combat Veterans when they read this book. Shay is neither the bard telling the story nor the warrior who lived it, but he takes the stories of those who were there and presents them in such a way that, reading them, "the old soldier weeps and weeps again...".
The truth is here. Another reviewer has viewed some of the stories with a measure of skepticism -- and there are some "red flags" in some of the stories -- but that is the nature of "War Stories" and those who know what "the facts on the ground" were can see therough all that to the essential truth that Shay so eloquently presents.
I bought this book because it was recommended to me by readers of my own book, "Aftermath: A Song For Tyrone..." and I am glad I did! I wish I had read it years ago!
If you are a Veteran -- or if there is a veteran who means a lot to you -- or if you just want to understand more about war and what it does to the soldier and to those who love him and to society in general -- buy this book! Buy it -- read it -- give it as a gift!

Sin City: Big Fat Kill, by Frank Miller

Join Frank Miller as he takes a ride through the mean streets of Sin City for another slice of his beautifully rendered black and white crime noir tales. Both the Mob and the police are starting to try and take over the part of Oldtown, which is currently run by ladies who work in the 'oldest profession'. But our 'hero', Dwight, knows something that the Mob's gotta learn the hard way: sometimes standing up for your friends means killing a whole bunch of people...It includes a five page colour Frank Miller gallery at the front and a black and white gallery at the back featuring the work of some of comics' best known artists such as Mike Mignola, John Romita and Joe Kubert.

Amazon.com Review
With The Big Fat Kill Frank Miller is at it again with another comics packed with guns, lovers, losers, and surprises. In Sin City's Old Town, the prostitutes run the show. "The cops stay out. That leaves the girls free to keep the pimps and the mob out." Sounds like an OK place, right? It is until a pushy, loud-mouthed guy who has had one too many drinks comes into Old Town and gets himself killed by the ladies. When they find out who he is, they realize that "it'll be war. The streets will run red with blood. Women's blood."

Review
The Guardian Guide, April 23-29 2005: " Graphic novels rarely get this graphic-in content or style."

Dwight has to help out the ladies of Old Town with a problem
By Lawrance Bernabo
"The Big Fat Kill," Book 3 of Frank Miller's "Sin City" graphic novels once again focuses on the character of Dwight, who got himself a new face and a new attitude in the previous story, "A Dame to Kill For." The latter was the more important part, because Dwight did not come across as being anyway as interesting as Marv, the hero of the first "Sin City" story who is back to lend Dwight a helping hand in the second. Dwight is not exactly alone this time either, but he is certainly more capable of holding his own than previously.

Dwight is spending some time with Shellie the waitress when Jackie Boy shows up with a mean drunk and four of his friends. The old Dwight would have had some problems with that situation, but our hero has definitely grown up. Getting Jackie Boy to leave Shellie alone should be the end of it, but Dwight is convinced that the night will not end until Jackie Boy hurts somebody and Dwight takes the responsibility for making sure that does not happen. But when Jackie Boy ends up to Old Town where the ladies ply their trade of prostitution and are the law, "beautiful and merciless," it looks like Dwight's help is not need at all. This, however, turns out to be the biggest mistake of the night and suddenly Dwight's services are most decidedly needed.

It will seem strange to pick out this particular "Sin City" story and say it is a bit over the top, since obviously all of them are. The ending is certainly brutally efficient but at the cost of any notion of elegance, which is usually preferred in a comic noir story such as this. Miller is certainly not experimenting as much in terms of his artwork as he was in the first novel in the series, but the rough way in which Dwight and Jackie Boy's faces are drawn is not to my liking. The full-page panels in this one have Miller's best artwork. This includes Dwight introducing Jackie Boy to the toilet, Dwight jumping into his car, and some of the ladies of Old Town. Still, all things considered, this ends up being a second tier Miller story and Dwight is still a second tier hero, still well worth the reading but not as good as it gets in "Sin City."

This trade paperback collects together the five issues of the original Dark Horse comic series, along with their covers (which actually introduce some color to Miller's artwork). In the back of the book you will find a Gallery of "Sin City" art contributed by the likes of Arthur Adams, Sergio Aragones, Joe Kumbert, Mike Mignola, John Romita, Walter Simonson, and some other artists who present their interpretations of Nancy Callahan, the ladies of Old Town, and other "Sin City" characters.

The soothing sounds of BRAKA BRAKA BRAK
By J. D. Estrada
Third book in the deliciously sinister series created by Frank Miller. If you've ever heard the phrase "They had it coming to them" and agreed, you should definitely read this book. If anything is great of this decidely Noir series is that all heroes in this series make you nod in approval in regards to bloody murder. That's the magic of Frank Miller, he puts situations which are obviously not conforming to society or what we deem as correct and spins it in a light that makes you not only acquiesce but root for hookers and murderers. If that's not talent I don't know what is. So how fat is the Big Fat Kill? Did you see seven, that first guy who was fed to death? Well add another ton or so. This series and this book is not for the weak of heart or stomach. Now if you do have the required like for gore necessary for this series, you will find yet another tale of alluringly torrid happenings in a city that makes Gotham look like a Winter Wonderland. Basin City... Population fluctuates and declines with every book.

The Dark Dwight Returns!
By Tyler S.
The return of Dwight and the arrival of Miho is a great story. I happened to see the film before I read this so the book was very easy to read, and unfortunately I wish I didn't know the ending. That being said, I'm going to further reccomend reading books before the film adaptation. Book 2 (not included in the film) had a very larger effect on me because I hadn't witnessed the epic story beforehand. Furthermore, this volume is really awesome, and I'm lucky that they made a great adaptation of it, so that I just saw the comic come to life, instead of the comic transform and cut and paste into film.

You won't find much new stuff aside from the film, but you will still enjoy seeing the "adventure" on panels. I suggest reading it after not seeing the film for awhile, that way you won't be speaking dialogue before its read. So far I've liked book 2 the best, but 1 & 3 are about equal in value. Thank you Frank Miller!

Superb, fun, no-nonsense 'how to sell to Buyers' book, from a top Buyer - highly recommend!
By Jkd4dan
Probably the best sales book I've read surprisingly, now it seems obvious to get your how to sell tips from a CPO / Buyer, that's who you have to win the contracts and orders from! Not found a selling book from a Buyer before so at last... great!
As Lord Sugar's endorsement (impressive) says, straight talking and clear advice, an easy read and I love the fun colour cartoons with each of the key messages, helps to break up the read.
Tim Ussher is clearly a seasoned and highly thought of procurement professional and hits the right balance of anecdotal stories, hard facts and tips, and a light hearted chatty writing style.
Highly recommend this to sellers and suppliers pitching to Buyers, follow the advice and there's no doubt you'll have a much better chance to win more contracts from these Buyers.
I found www.winningselling.com after buying the book, which gives a bit more info if you need it.

The best how to sell book I’ve read, from a top Buyer
By Amazon Customer
This is a really easy, light hearted read, but packed with advice and tips on how to impress the Buyers.
The author has a nice writing style and talks to you, advises you, doesn’t preach or teach which I like.
A lot of the tips you kind of already know, but don’t do, so it’s a great reminder on how to sharpen up your selling game and improve your chances of winning orders.
The cartoons are unique and fun and help put across the top tips. It’s also unique that we have a Buyer telling sales people what they want and how to improve selling techniques which is great, from the horses mouth!
Lord Sugar is a highly thought of and successful businessman, I can see why this book has his valuable endorsement – recommend to anyone in business.

Tess's Tale (The Chanel Series Book 3), by Donna Joy Usher

Another book by the multi-award-winning author Donna Joy Usher.
Please note - this is a light-hearted, humorous, chicklit, female sleuth novel. If you are looking for a literary masterpiece with a deep meaning this is probably not the book for you.
This is Book Three in The Chanel Series and while it could be read alone it will make more sense if you have already read Cocoa and Chanel, and Goons 'n' Roses.

It’s been twenty-five years since that hellish night. Twenty-five years of living in denial, and Tess still doesn’t want to think about it. But now her daughter, Chanel, is insisting that she spill the beans.
So Tess must cast her mind back to a life of passion and betrayal, to a time of violence and death, and she must face her past to tell us… what really happened to Lou the Brain.

From the Author
I wasn't quite sure where this was going when I began writing it, but Tess did. And she wouldn't let me stop writing till I had it perfect. She paced in my head while she dictated it to me, stomping her feet when I didn't get it quite right.
Red heads! They can be quite feisty when they don't get their own way.
But luckily I eventually perfected it and she let me publish it for all of you to read.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Entertaining

I received an advance copy in exchange for an honest review. Therefore, this book will not show up as a verified purchase on Amazon.com.

This book picks up immediately where “Goons ‘n’ Roses left off, then launches into Tess’s back story. While this book can stand alone, I’d recommend starting the series from the beginning, with “Cocoa and Chanel.” While the first two books in the series are written from Chanel’s point of view, “Tess’s Tale” is truly Tess’s tale.

I would consider the first two books of the Chanel series cozy mysteries, while book 3, “Tess’s Tale,” reads more like a light thriller with some shades of darker stuff. We follow Tess through her childhood to young adulthood to find out how she got mixed up with the Mafia and what really happened to Lou the Brain. It’s a tale of love and betrayal.

This series is marketed as “chick lit.” It’s aimed at a female market and is light reading. Each book can be easily read in a weekend (and I’m a painfully slow reader), excellent for lounging on the beach or on a long flight or just to decompress after a hard week at work.

The answers revealed
By Rachael C. Sebastian
i loved that Ms. Joy saved the answers to this trilogy for the last book. Suspense and theory built through the first two books with little hints scattered throughout. Finally the answers to "what happened that night" are revealed. The adventure and journey that Chanel, her family and friends are led on let them discover so much more than they bargained for. Set in Las Vegas with the mob reeking havoc with their plans, adding a few wrenches to their plans along the way.

Loved This Book!
By Carla M. Bowling
I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is a well written, light -hearted easy read. I have to say that I am not particularly fond of most series books, but this one is definitely worth the money. Start with book one so you can enjoy the entire story. I believe this is the best book in the series. You get the answers you were seeking from the first two books. It was amazing!
