The World Between Two Covers: Reading the Globe, by Ann Morgan

A beguiling exploration of the joys of reading across boundaries, inspired by the author's yearlong journey through a book from every country. Ann Morgan writes in the opening of this delightful book, "I glanced up at my bookshelves, the proud record of more than 20 years of reading, and found a host of English and North American greats starting down at me.... I had barely touched a work by a foreign language author in years.... The awful truth dawned. I was a literary xenophobe." Prompted to read a book translated into English from each of the world's 195 UN-recognized countries (plus Taiwan and one extra), Ann sought out classics, folktales, current favorites, and commercial triumphs, novels, short stories, memoirs, and countless mixtures of all these things. The world between two covers, the world to which Ann introduces us with affection and no small measure of wit, is a world rich in the kind of narratives that engage us passionately: We meet an irreverent junk food-obsessed heroine in Kuwait, an explorer from Togo who spent years among the Inuit in Greenland, and a former child circus performer of Roma background seeking sanctuary in Switzerland. Ann's quest explores issues that affect us all: personal, political, national, and global. What is cultural heritage? How do we define national identity? Is it possible to overcome censorship and propaganda? And, above all, why and how should we read from other cultures, languages, and traditions? Illuminating and inspiring, The World Between Two Covers welcomes us into the global community of stories.

5/5 for concept. 2/5 for execution.
By Brontëana
The idea of reading books from around the world is absolutely terrific, and is what prompted me to pre-order this book. I can't recommend the prose style as highly. The style is extremely, chronically long-winded. Sentences which run on for more than a page are common place. It was extremely tedious and, in the end, I just could not go on.The name-dropping, extended academic quotes and jargon are at home in a term-paper, perhaps. In a book of this nature, it made the prose feel pretentious and alienating to this reader.

Around the World in 196 Books
By takingadayoff
Blogger Ann Morgan spent a year reading books from nearly every nation, 196 (plus one) books in all. This is the story of why she did it, how she accomplished it, and many questions and thoughts that arose in the course of the project.

I was surprised that the book was not very much about the individual books she read, but that was fine with me, since I was more interested in the logistics (How did she find get books from North Korea? How did she decide what constitutes a country? What was the quality of the translation into English?) If you want to know about the books as she read them, they're still on her blog. But the book cover and marketing led me to believe that this would be more about the books themselves, so I'm not surprised that some readers are disappointed.

It's a monumental undertaking to try to cram into a single year. Just reading the books would have taken longer than that, I would have thought, and the time it took to find possible candidates, track them down and acquire them was another full time job. Add to that the regular blog posts and responses to interested followers, and it's quite an impressive accomplishment.

Morgan is a thinking reader and she examines such topics as censorship, the influence of English on the rest of the world, the internet's effect on focused reading, the nature of translation and the responsibilities of translators. She also talks about libraries, bookshops, her bookshelves, and reading on the subway.

She even talks about the books themselves from time to time, but I suspect that out of any collection of two hundred books, only about a quarter to a third of them will be worthwhile and that there will be quite a few stinkers in the batch. Morgan doesn't suggest anything like this though, so don't go looking for caustic reviews in The World Between Two Covers. She sticks to the positive aspects and to the larger issues that they suggest.

I've been enjoying this recent boom of books about reading. The World Between Two Covers is most like the The Shelf: From LEQ to LES: Adventures in Extreme Reading by Phyllis Rose, but also fits in the same category as My Life in Middlemarch, How to Be a Heroine: Or, What I've Learned from Reading too Much (Vintage Original), and The Year of Reading Dangerously: How Fifty Great Books (and Two Not-So-Great Ones) Saved My Life. This is Morgan's first book and I'm looking forward to more from her.

A delightfully unexpected journey through the world of translating, publishing, and reading
By Jennifer Grey
Frequently when bloggers make the leap to book publishing, the result is a pretty paper repackaging of their digital content, so I expected Morgan’s The World Between Two Covers to be a simple recap of her year-long project of reading books from around the world – a breezy literary travelogue, if you will. Instead, while the books she read do make cameo appearances throughout the text as well as being listed in an appendix, Morgan offers us something a great deal more interesting than simple regurgitation, telling us the story around the stories and the surprising logistical (how does one get books from North Korea?) and ethical (what exactly constitutes a country, anyway?) roadblocks she encountered on her journey.

It’s a fascinating trip, full of WTF moments (HOW low is the percentage of foreign books translated into English?) and authorial insights, including an extended section in harmony with Adichie’s argument about the dangers of a country or a people being known by a single story. Particularly, as Morgan points out, when that story may have been chosen for translation because it has just the “right amount of foreignness” (read: slight exoticism) to make it in the global market, rather than because it’s truly representative. It’s a surprisingly, delightfully academic look at reading and publishing, with fun discursive dips into the multiplicity of reasons people read - Sherlock Holmes stories became wildly popular in China in the late nineteenth century due to their perceived educational value – and the challenges of translation, which go back at least to the 4th century CE, when St. Jerome sharply replied to criticisms of his translations of the Pope’s letters by arguing that translation is meant to be not word for word but sense for sense.

The World Between Two Covers isn’t the journey I was expecting when I picked it up, but the beauty of travel is in the surprises it can hold; Morgan’s thoughtful and beautifully written consideration of our responsibility as readers is one of the best I’ve had.

The Women Who Lived for Danger: The Agents of the Special Operations Executive, by Marcus Binney

The Special Operations Executive was formed by Winston Churchill in 1940 to "set Europe ablaze." In the SOE women were trained to handle guns and explosives, work undercover, endure interrogation by the Gestapo, and use complex codes. In The Women Who Lived for Danger, acclaimed historian Marcus Binney recounts the story of ten remarkable women who were dropped in occupied territories to work as secret agents.

Once they were behind enemy lines, theirs was the most dangerous war of all, as they led apparently normal civilian lives while in constant danger of arrest. They organized dropping grounds for arms and explosives destined for the Resistance, helped operate escape lines for airmen who had been shot down over Europe, and provided Allied Command with vital intelligence. SOE women agents came from all walks of life: from the dazzling Polish Countess Krystyna Skarbek (alias Christine Granville) and the American Virginia Hall, who was from a rich Baltimore family, to Marguerite Knight, a secretary in Walthamstow. Petite Lisa de Baissac lived next to Gestapo headquarters in Poitiers playing the part of a quiet widow, while twenty-year-old student Paola Del Din was sent to find a way through the German front line in Florence. Hot-tempered Paddy O'Sullivan deflected a German officer from examining her suitcase by making a date with him, and Alix d'Unienville feigned madness when captured.

The stories of these women agents -- some famous, some virtually unknown -- are told with the help of extensive new archive material. Their exploits form a new chapter of heroism in the history of warfare matched only by their determination, resourcefulness, and ability to stay cool in the face of extreme danger.

From Publishers Weekly
In this collection of short, suspenseful biographies, Binney (Our Vanishing Heritage; Chateaux of the Loire, etc.) draws on published accounts, interviews and official records (including personnel files) to recount the careers of 10 women who spied for the British Special Operations Executive in German-occupied Europe. During World War II, these women operated as intelligence agents, clandestine radio operators and German saboteurs for the SOE-an organization created to wreak havoc behind German lines. Several were caught, tortured and later executed. Among them were Christina Granville, whom the press later dubbed "a modern pimpernel no man could resist," Virginia Hall, an American newspaper woman with a wooden leg who worked three years in occupied territory without being arrested, and Lela Karayanni, who organized sabotage with the help of her five children. Although much has already been written about some of the women in this history, a few of those featured are less well known, such Paola Del Din, who carried secret messages through the German front line in Florence. And Binney's use of official sources lends an air of authenticity often absent in some earlier accounts of these women's careers. (He also provides background on the SOE's history, training and operations for readers untutored in WWII special operations and espionage particulars.) Although the treatment of these heroines is a bit cursory and occasionally romanticized (e.g. "the girls who served as secret agents in Churchill's Special Operations Executive were young, beautiful, and brave"), Binney succeeds in presenting a lively, accurate introduction to 10 courageous women and their unusual exploits.

Review
“True-life espionage adventures far beyond any fictional James Bond movie. ” (Times Colonist (Victoria, BC))

About the Author
Marcus Binney is an accomplished historian and writer who is the author of Our Vanishing Heritage, Townhouses, and Airports. Binney attended Cambridge, and has lectured extensively to historical societies in New York, Boston, Rhode Island, and Virginia on architectural preservation and history. He has also fronted a thirty-nine-part series -- Mansions: The Great Houses of Europe -- broadcast in the U.S. between 1993 and 1997.

Binney's interest in the lives of the agents of the SOE is a personal one. His father, Lt. Col. Francis Simms, MC, walked seven hundred miles through the Apennines after twice escaping from POW camps. His mother, Sonia, did secret work with code breakers during the war and in 1955 remarried Sir George Binney, DSO, also a war hero, who had carried out one of the most successful blockade-running operations of World War II in 1941 -- bringing back five unarmed merchant ships from Sweden through the minefields.

For fans of ALIAS meet the real women who risked everything
By A Customer
"They flirted with men...and with death!"
"Sky-Girl spied for 7 Months"
"No plane so Spy Girl died"
"All these unknown young girls have proved one thing forever. The toughest tests of courage and endurance faced by men can be passed with honor by women."
Marcus Binney introduces the reader to 10 young, bold, brilliant and fascinating women recruited to go behind enemy lines, passing themselves off as ordinary citizens, and leading normal lives-in constant danger of arrest and execution. At a time when survival didn't just require physical toughness, but the ability to live a cover story that could hold up under the toughest interrogation, women simply excelled. They were not commandos with masterful martial arts moves, nor modern Bond girls-this was an age when young women wouldn't bicycle for fear of bulky muscular thighs-they were simply charismatic and brilliant and displayed cool courage, intelligence, and adaptability in every situation-passing themselves off as country wenches by afternoon and chic Parisiennes by night. Putting country, and service to Britain and the Allied forces above all concerns for personal safety-they organized dropping grounds for explosives destined for the Resistance; helped operate escape lines for pilots shot down over Europe, and provided the Allies with vital intelligence.
This book is addictive, inspiring, and well worth ordering and sharing with the other women in your life.

Keeping their Memory Alive
By A Customer
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book with regard to the female agents of the Special Operations Executive; if anything, I did not want it to end but be more detailed. For someone who is beginning research into the subject, it is an excellent source to begin for some of the top agent names and leads via the sources / bibliography. Other famous agents such as Odette Sanson or Nancy Wake aka the White Mouse are not covered, but one of the most famous and well known agents, Violette Szabo is covered by a chapter. Other books to recommend would be We Landed by Moonlight by a top SOE pilot Hugh Verity,SOE in France by M.R.D. Foot, and Between Silk and Cyanide; Leo Marks.
The sacrifices made by these brave individuals should never be forgotten.

Good introduction to a fascinating topic
By M. Bielenberg
Marcus Binney's book is a wonderful introductory book for anybody wanting information on women involved in espionage during WWII. These are remarkable stories about remarkable women, and a part of WWII history which is rarely covered. The book gives a quick introduction to 10 women who were important to these efforts, along with a glimpse of what they went through to prepare for their missions and the price they sometimes paid. If you want to learn about the women of the OSS, this is a great place to start, before delving into the longer volumes dedicated to the individual women (notably Violet Szabo, Virginia Hall and Vera Atkins).

Introduction to Counseling: An Art and Science Perspective, by Michael S. Nystul

Introduction to Counseling by Michael Scott Nystul provides an overview of counseling and the helping professions from the perspective of art and science—the science of counseling that generates a knowledge base proven to promote competency and efficacy in the practitioner, and the art of using this knowledge base to build skills that can be applied sensitively to clients in a multicultural society.

The Fifth Edition has been organized into three sections: (1) an overview of counseling and the counseling process, (2) multicultural counseling and counseling theories, and (3) special approaches and settings. It continues to address key topics and issues, including gender, culture, and sexual orientation, and offers ways to integrate multiculturalism into all aspects of counseling, rather than view it as a separate entity. Highlighting emerging trends and changes in ethical codes, as well as reflecting the latest updates to the Diagnostic Statistical Manual (DSM-5), the book successfully illustrates the importance of art and science to modern-day counseling.

This collection of poetry explores the concept of time and how it affects people in different ways. Humans are always caught somewhere between the memories of yesterday, the moments of now, and the wonders of tomorrow. This is how they were born to live; bound in the reigns of a little thing called time.

Beautifully written. Made me super nostalgic at times. So much insight to the young mind and how they see the world through their eyes...

Reads like a draft with much room to improve.
By Josh D.
I don't believe the Kindle version varies from paper but there is plenty of white space. Enough to elaborate more on potentially riveting memoirs. Normally, the shorter the work, the more impactful each word (and even punctuation) becomes, and there is just not much of that here. Simply put, I couldn't find much depth in this poetry chapbook.

Law's Relations: A Relational Theory of Self, Autonomy, and Law, by Jennifer Nedelsky

Autonomy is one of the core concepts of legal and political thought, yet also one of the least understood. The prevailing theory of liberal individualism characterizes autonomy as independence, yet from a social perspective, this conception is glaringly inadequate. In this brilliantly innovative work, Jennifer Nedelsky claims that we must rethink our notion of autonomy, rejecting the usual vocabulary of control, boundaries, and individual rights. If we understand that we are fundamentally in relation to others, she argues, we will recognize that we become autonomous with others--with parents, teachers, employers, and the state. We should not therefore regard autonomy as merely a conceptual tool for assigning rights, but as a capacity that can be fostered or undermined throughout one's life through the relationships and the societal structures we inhabit. The political project thus should not only be to protect the individual from the state and keep the state out, but to use law to construct relations with the state that enhance autonomy. Law's Relations includes many concrete legal applications of her theory of relational autonomy, offering new insights into the debates over due process, judicial review, violence against women, and private versus public law

Law and medicine can be caught in a tight embrace. They both play a central role in the politics of harm, making decisions regarding what counts as injury and what might be the most suitable forms of redress or remedy. But where do law and medicine converge and diverge in their responses to and understandings of harm and suffering? Using empirical case studies from Europe, the Americas and Africa, The Clinic and the Court brings together leading medical and legal anthropologists to explore this question.
