Ethical Criticism: Reading After Levinas, by Robert Eaglestone

What is the relationship between literary criticism and ethics? Does criticism have an ethical task? How can criticism be ethical after literary theory? Ethical Criticism seeks to answer these questions by examining the historical development of the ethics of criticism and the vigorous contemporary backlash against what is known as 'theory'. The book appraises current arguments about the ethics of criticism and, finding them wanting, turns to the philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas. Described as 'the greatest moral philosopher of the twentieth century', Levinas' thought has had a profound influence on a number of significant contemporary thinkers. By paying close attention to his major writings, Robert Eaglestone argues cogently and persuasively for a new understanding of the ethical task of criticism and theory.

Review
Eaglestone's book breaks new ground...the information provided helped me further understand Levinas within the tradition of a philosophy that would at one time reject the aesthetic, but simultaneously use the asethetic example to make many of its points. A welcome illustration of the pertinence of Levinas to current debates about the ethical value of literature and reading. Levinas is a difficult writer, and Eaglestone succeeds in explicating key Levinasian ideas about the saying and the said in ways that will help literary critics and theorists build productive conceptual links between this enormously stimulating thinker and other voices among those concerned with the ethical dimension of reading. High adventure and treasure!
By Patrick W. Crabtree
I have no idea why this novel never surpassed "Treasure Island" as a literary success because it's really so much better than that well-known, fine tale! This is a very old book, originally published in 1895 by Charles Scribner's Sons.

Here, Captain Horn, his small crew (the ones which survive), and some passengers (including women) are shipwrecked on the coast of South America. It's a wilderness in terms of expecting any help to arrive, and hundreds of miles away from any civilized community.

Ultimately, the party moves into a cave for protection against both the elements and unfriendlies who show up. Through a comedy of errors, a treasure trove beyond all belief, cached away by an ancient civilization, is discovered. That singular fact changes the dynamic of the activities of the castaways, forcing them to change their approach to their probable rescue.

I'll stop right there to avoid spoilers but, be assured, this is a superb adventure tale. The author, Frank R. Stockton, was a master at launching 'a turn of events' on his readers.

The (original 1895 hardcover) book is 404 pages in length and there is a sort of sequel, entitled "Mrs. Cliff's Yacht," published in 1907, again by Charles Scribner's Sons.

Don't miss this one, folks!

Better than Treasure Island!
By Patrick W. Crabtree
This work far exceeds that renowned R.L. Stevenson treasure. Written in 1895, readers will not be in the least disappointed after having savored this epic mystery/adventure. One of the ten best books I've ever read. A correction of the author's name, it is Frank R. Stockton.

The story is all about a 19th-Century shipwreck along the uninhabited coast of South America. There are women in the group as well as the Captain and some crew members. A few men row away for help (VERY far away!) but before any rescue can occur, ruthless pirates ascend upon the group. Also, a huge treasure is suddenly discovered in an ancient cavern, which serves to even further complicate the prospective rescue.

Brilliant!

Amazing and Delightful Twists and Turns
By Peter Renz
This is an amusing book, full of surprises. Frank Stockton is famous for writing "The Lady or the Tiger?," but his novels and short humorous pieces are all a delight to read. And there are plenty of them. His collected works come to 23 volumes. It is nice to see this one back in print.

You might sample his work at the library. There is much to choose from.

TNTC Luke (Tyndale New Testament Commentaries), by Leon Morris

The Gospel of Luke presents many unique pictures of Jesus. We see him in his Father's house as a child, we see him deliberately associating with the poor and the disreputable, and we see him in communion with the Holy Spirit. But we also see the larger picture of Jesus setting out resolutely for Jerusalem in order to fulfil God's plan for the world. With a critical awareness of scholarly discussions and a practical attentiveness to both the text and the reader, Leon Morris carefully places the themes of Luke's Gospel within the context of God's plan for all people. This classic commentary has been completely retypeset and presented in a fresh, vibrant new large paperback format, with new global branding.

Perfect Entry Level Commentary
By Dr Simon Perry (author of Atheism After Christendom)
This is a perfect popular commentary. I've been using it since my GCSE in religious studies decades ago - and as an ignorant non-Christian 16 year old found this extremely helpful. I still consider the best of the non-academic heavyweight commentaries for focussing on the individual details of verses. I've often heard, and think it's generally true - that the Tyndale commentary series is complemented perfectly by the BST (Bible Speaks Today) commentaries which focuses more on passages as a whole. In this particular instance, Wilcock (BST) and Morris - taken together as commentaries have everything for the pre-graduate student and lay preacher. It's a little dated on the political front (political readings have come to the fore in the last few years - and have yet to be reflected in any mainstream commentaries.) In sum - Morris is a clear writer who captures the important detail in every verse.

Review of Mastery of Destiny
By Emory Stephens
James Allen is a serious philosopher with answers to many of life's most important questions. If you are a serious thinker about life and the nature of reality, this is for you. If you are not a person who can think for himself and know all you want to know already, you would not like it. But as for me I find all of James Allen's works to be tremendously helpful

From School Library Journal
Grade 7 Up—Ever since he can remember, Abel Jackson has loved the sea. As the story opens, Abel and his widowed mother are living in Longboat Bay, a remote area of Australia. They make their living by diving for abalones, careful to take only what is needed from the sea. The story spans 27 years. At the age of 10, Abel plays and works hard with his mother. A giant, somewhat mystical blue grouper is their constant underwater companion. Both mother and son are fiercely protective of the sea and the surrounding habitat. As the story progresses, they confront a greedy over-fishing poacher and unscrupulous land developers. Abel grows up, goes away to university, and becomes a marine biologist in an attempt to learn even more about the secrets of the sea. He marries another marine biologist, becomes a father, and eventually returns home to take care of his aging mother. The cycle begins anew as Abel's daughter meets Blueback. Stig Wemyss's lively voice and Australian accent adds to the authenticity of Tom Winton's story (Scribner, 1998) and keeps it moving along. The strong message threaded throughout the story is the need to protect and preserve the sea, its resources, and the surrounding habitat.—Mary Oluonye, Shaker Heights Public Library, OH

He has won the Miles Franklin Award four times (for Shallows, Cloudstreet, Dirt Music and Breath) and has twice been shortlisted for the Booker Prize (for The Riders and Dirt Music). Stig Wemyss is an actor, writer and the voice behind millions of children s audio books. Well, not millions. Thousands Alright, more like hundreds He has a huge fan club. Bolinda Audio is constantly receiving letters from kids saying things like Stig Rocks and I love Stig and Stig Wemyss is the best narrator in the world . Of course we don t show Stig all these letters, as he already thinks he s the best narrator in the universe! Now that he is also the author of an exciting in-car audio entertainment series, The Tripp Diaries, he thinks he s the best narrator and the best author in the universe. We think he is too, but let s just keep that to ourselves!

From AudioFile
Many people find the Australian accent the most congenial in all of the English-speaking world. Unfortunately, that is the high point in this audiobook, which seems unlikely to please either adults or children. Winton, a Booker Prize nominee not long ago, has returned with an ecological tale that suffers from simple-mindedness and a distinct lack of story. It concerns a young Australian boy named Abel and his mother, who live on a beautiful bay threatened by polluters and greedy fishermen. "Blueback" is the gigantic grouper who becomes Abel's lifelong friend and guide to underwater life. For a title character, he is one silly, uninvolving creation. Wemyss is a gentle companion, but he's a long way from being able to compensate for the sins of the author. M.O. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

a spiritual journey
By frustrated mystic
The book "Blueback" by Tim Winton (1997) is an older reader novel, which narrates the story of Abel. The story begins when Abel is ten years old and ends when he is a grown man with a wife and a child of his own. The story explores universal human themes like love for family, passion, growing older and belonging; topics that readers about the age of ten could relate to in quite profound ways. At the beginning of Blueback ten year old Abel's world consists of the sea-diving in particular, and his mother, Dora. As he is diving he encounters a `strange' fish, Blueback:

At the corner of his eye he saw a blue shadow that blocked the sun. He whirled around to see a huge mouth and an eye the size of a golfball coming at him. The mouth opened. He saw massive pegs of teeth as it came on in a terrible rush. Abel screamed in his snorkel..."

Blueback's `strangeness' is a type of metaphor for Abel's burgeoning adolescence. He is ten and so therefore on the verge of that time in life where as the reader becomes aware, he meets with personal conflict and dilemmas as he begins to form his own views and values, discovering who he is and who he wants to be.

Indeed Winton uses metaphors of nature in a profound way throughout Blueback to demonstrate change in Abel's life. For example, as Abel grows older he "wants to know what the sea is about" yet as the reader discovers the `sea' Abel is about to discover is that of life, for just as the sea is a mystery waiting to be lived so is his life at his young inquisitve age:

"It was a mystery. And the more he thought about it the more the whole sea seemed to be a puzzle. Abel wanted to figure it out."

Abel leaves his home, becomes a biologist and travels through the world, gaining honours and achievements, yet in a `spiritual' sense he never leaves his childhood home at Robber's Head. It remains for him a source of belonging and love in the changing flux of his life.

Indeed, so important is the sea and Blueback for Abel that the fish is given human qualities. When for example there is a problem with the ocean, Winton places the humanness of the animal in contrast with the greed of the reefstripper "Costello" who loves the sea only as something of a giant supermarket, fit just for human consumption.

Through Abel then, Winton seems to be saying that although human beings need to use nature for survival it is more than an economic resource. As the wheel of Abel's life turns he meets the inevitable fact of death as his mother passes away, yet death is not final in Winton's story; Abel's love of the sea is renewed in the form of his three year old child who meets the giant fish, Blueback, just as he did as a boy, and so the cycle of love and wonder in nature is renewed in her.

A Beautiful Fable
By Foster Corbin
Abel Jackson, who lives with his widowed mother on the coast of Western Australia, has always been in love with the sea. He and his mother dive for abalone to make a living, but they are always careful not to abuse nature in any way. From the age of ten Abel is friends with a huge groper, "as fat as an opera singer," whom he names Blueback. Years later after he has become a successful marine biologist "married to another marine biologist," he returns to the place where he grew up to care for his aging mother, described as not your average mother for she too loves the sea and its inhabitants and simply outlasts the developers intent on building a resort where she lives, complete with a hotel, golf course, swimming pool, a marina with the accompanying "rich tourists," "international entrepreneurs" and whalewatchers. All Abel's life he is intent on learning the "language of the sea."

Mr. Winton calls this extended short story "a contemporary fable" in which he says that we violate nature at our own peril. We can learn from the sea and its inhabitants by watching and listening. And greed is an awful thing.

This little volume is a great book for children-- and their parents.

Good Little Book With Many Useful Ideas.
By Writer/Producer/Director
If you're interested in getting ideas on how to present ideas graphically, this is a good little book. As many other reviewers have pointed out, several of the articles were prepared by graphic designers (some by hand in fact) and not computer graphics packages. If you're looking for suggestions on how to present ideas graphically, this is perfectly fine,... even useful. However, if you're looking for information on how to prepare graphics using Excel, you're out of luck (however, there are dozens of other books that can help you). That's just not what this books is about. Instead, the book gives you several suggestions for expressing the relationship between various activities (flow charts, diagrams, etc) illustrating performance timelines (bar graphs, area graphs, etc), and other information. However, where this book really shines, is in showing you how to incorporate various illustrations into your graphics to make them truly unique and informative. The benefit of this book is in teaching you how to conceptialize and develop unique graphics -- not in telling you how to produce generic off-the-shelf graphics. I'd recommend this book, along with "Information Graphics" by Harris and "Digital Diagrams" by Bounford, to anyone interested in learning more about charts. Overall Grade: B+/A-

Getting the point across
By Peter Keusgen
As an equity analyst, consultant, and communication specialist, I saw - and made - dozens of colorful presentations with the best charts that excel can draw that simply didn't work.

After the failed presentation, a consultant or analyst who knows how to get his point across will draw a simple diagram or chart on a white board that will be far more convincing and effective than the entire PowerPoint presentation.

This book is for the person who wants to get point across.

Consider it part of a broad business education
By D. Macneil
When one considers the amount of time/money they spend on improving their job skills, it would seem obvious that a high-value read like 'Say it with Charts' would be worth some consideration. It provides a framework for using charts to your advantage- and not just within oral presentations. If anything, this book will increase your willingness to use charts to your advantage when selling an opinion. It forces the user to think about exactly what it is they are trying to say - and then produce a professional looking chart to relay that message.

Any edition will do - the content will not change with the times. The underlying principles can be quite powerful and can be the difference between a simple presentation and one which elicites praise.
