A good ight reading
By Nandkumar Y Sanglikar
It is a good light novel which takes you back to your younger days! Try to read it for the sake of a youthful nostalgia! The setting is typically Indian and the author emotes very well as an Indian youth. The author's style of story telling is flowing and his language is befitting the style. The story has its periodic surprises and shocks which makes it an interesting reading. However, towards the end it drags a bit.

If you enjoy reading something youthful, don's miss this novel. However, I don't really know if the novel will appeal to the international reader as the issues are basically Indian by nature.

Good for one time read.
By Hardik
This is one of the novels which can be described as unpredictable. It's full of romance. You will enjoy it till the end. But some characters lack the depth and female antagonist character seems confusing which makes it good for one time read.

Review

“Elegantly conceived, flawlessly executed . . . Gordimer tells a love story unlike any other I have ever read.” ―Jack Miles, The New York Times Book Review

“As the moral anatomy of a murder, The House Gun will seem to American readers closer to their own existence than many Gordimer books.” ―The Washington Post

“An intellectual thriller with a soap opera engine . . . Nothing short of epic.” ―The Baltimore Sun

“A memorable blend of the topical and the timeless, at once a profound, lingering meditation on the human heart and a story so gripping you can scarcely bear to put it down.” ―San Francisco Chronicle

“It feels like the reworking of pages from the notebook of an excellent journalist, an observer sitting for the first time on the Court's press benches and recording the historic scene as human rights are finally incorporated into South African supreme law.” ―Neal Ascherson, The New York Review of Books

“As complex, compelling, and memorable an account of race and class as any of her earlier works . . . A brilliant, beautifully crafted novel of betrayal.” ―The Dallas Morning News

“The House Gun is like a well-cut diamond. Its many angles and planes catch the light and illuminate understanding, laying bare the emotions of a people caught in the transition from one world to another.” ―The Orlando Sentinel

“Gordimer is a major literary figure, working at the peak of her craft . . . The House Gun is an awe-inspiring work.” ―The Cincinnati News and Observer

“Exquisitely drawn . . . Passionately intelligent, it's more complicated than any detective story. Complicated not so much by plot, it's about the mystery of the human heart, the ‘mystery that is the other individual, even the one you have created out of your own flesh.'” ―Bob Minzesheimer, USA Today

“A passionately schematic moral anatomy of a murder.” ―Kirkus

From the Back Cover
A house gun, like a house cat: a fact of ordinary life, today. How else can you defend yourself against losing your hi-fi equipment, your TV set and computer? The respected Executive Director of an insurance company, Harald, and his doctor wife, Claudia, are faced with something that could never happen to them: their son, Duncan, has committed murder. What kind of loyalty do a mother and father owe a son who has committed the unimaginable horror? How could he have ignored the sanctity of human life? What have they done to influence his character; how have they failed him? Nadine Gordimer's new novel is a passionate narrative of the complex manifestations of that final test of human relations we call love - between lovers of all kinds, and parents and children. It moves with the restless pace of living itself; if it is a parable of present violence, it is also an affirmation of the will to reconciliation that starts where it must, between individual men and women.

About the Author

Nadine Gordimer (1923–2014), the recipient of the 1991 Nobel Prize in Literature, was born in a small South African town. Her first book, a collection of stories, was published when she was in her early twenties. Her ten books of stories include Something Out There (1984), and Jump and Other Stories (1991). Her novels include The Lying Days (1953), A World of Strangers (1958), Occasion for Loving (1963), The Late Bourgeois World (1966), A Guest of Honour (1971), The Conservationist (1975), Burger's Daughter (1979), July's People (1981), A Sport of Nature (1987), My Son's Story (1990), None to Accompany Me (1994), The House Gun (1998), The Pickup (2001), Get a Life (2005), and No Time Like the Present (2012). A World of Strangers, The Late Bourgeois World, and Burger's Daughter were originally banned in South Africa. Ms. Gordimer was a vice president of PEN International and an executive member of the Congress of South African Writers. The House Gun is No Misfire
By Linda K. Crawford
I'm baffled by the negative reviews this book has garnered here; I suppose it's more of a reaction to Gordimer's subject matter than to her style or content. People are more comfortable with a revolutionary spouting rhetoric that they agree with: if you, as a reader, are still wrapping your brain around the reality of South Africa as it was, Gordimer's earlier works will ring more true with you. If, however, you are interested in the legacy of Apartheid as it is, The House Gun will resonate more. The House Gun, so to speak, will only fire in the direction in which you point it.
As with all Gordimer works, the pace is slow and deliberately so, the words carefully chosen not to describe action but to allow the reader into the minds and souls of people who have lived in circumstances of which the majority of us can hardly conceive. The plot, intriguing though it is, is really secondary to the introspection taken on by each of the accused murderer's parents; the most pressing question, that of choosing to support your child with whatever means you have at your disposal (financial, spiritual, intellectual, emotional)in the face of your indecision as to whether or not you believe his version of events (or if any version of events would be acceptable). If your child murdered someone else, how would you feel? What would you do? Is the social legacy of apartheid going to color your beliefs; what happens when you are "open-minded" (no one ever really is), and your child commits a race crime? Do you use the race card to exonerate him, even when you are repulsed by his choice and behavior? And while the stress of saving your child from what he or she deserves in the course of law taps all of your inner resources, what happens to your marriage, your career, your friendships, your faith? Do you question all of your motives, all of your beliefs, all of your emotions?
I believe that you do. Every crisis, by nature, requires self-examination. It is not always pretty, or easy to accept, what you find at the end of your questioning. Gordimer, here, takes this family's condition, in microcosm, to expose South Africa's current quandary, many years after the abolition of Apartheid. Where do they stand as a society? What do they believe? What is excusable, what is justifiable? Who pays for what has been done, and how? Where will they go? What will be possible? No one knows, and maybe that's too unsettling for most.

Disappointing
By A Customer
Gordimer is an excellent writer, but The House Gun finds her far from the top of her game. The plot of the story is certainly intriguing: in post-apartheid South Africa, a man is accused of murdering his lover; his affluent, supposedly liberal parents hire a black attorney to represent him, despite the fact that the parents have never interacted with a black person in their lives. Gordimer has a great deal to say here about the legacy of apartheid, its violence, and about liberal culture, but getting to these messages is arduous. Even by literary standards, the text is dry, devoid of humor and even emotion to the point of being painful, and Gordimer does little to help her cause by adopting such a difficult style, weighting down the text with unpunctuated dialogue and terse prose. Unlike other "challenging" works (read: Faulkner, Joyce, early Gordimer, etc.) that ultimately reward readers for their efforts, The House Gun has a promising start that languishes up to an unsatisfying ending. The reviewer who stated that this is not a work for "best seller" readers is certainly on the mark, but I would go as far as to say that this isn't really much of a book for those of us with high brow tastes. Gordimer has written a number of outstanding books (My Son's Story, Burger's Daughter, and Jump come to mind), but The House Gun falls short of Gordimer's standards. If you love Gordimer, you'll probably read this book anyway, but her new readers (and I highly recommend reading her) should start elsewhere.

a very wise, very moving and insightful psychological drama, Gordimir's best novel
By Uzi I. Ben-Ami
Gordimer is a very serious 1991 Nobelprize winner poilitical writer, who put herself in harm's way and did not only write about the plight of the victims but also took action. She was arrested and spent time in jail for fighting against the Apartheid in South Africa. Much of her writing dealt with the ethical dilemas of the silent majorities in different ethical issues (not only but mostly Apartheid), not sparing the feelings of most of us who sympathize but do nothing or even avoid hearing about the plight of others.

This is a psychologically sophisticated book that deals primarily (not only) with the complicated relationship between parents, and between parents and an adult child in jail for murder. Very wise. One of the only books I read in decades that did stir a sense of guilt in me and provoked and evoked a desire to take action. Generally her stye is very sparing, quick, forcing me to willingly read passages more than once, full of ideas and intricate thoughts and dialogues. It is a stunningly insightful book, and if you read it at the appropriate slow pace will be unforgetable.

Room for improvement
By Matt Hetling
I have mixed feelings about this book. I strongly support the idea of presenting a broad range of arguments all related to one core issue, but I suppose I feel that this book didn't do a particularly good job at making that concept come to life.

Some of the topics, such as "Frontier," seem too broad to really stimulate much of a discussion, and also too rooted in history to have much of an application for opinions on modern issues. The layout and visuals are also not very well done, which will be a turnoff to the reluctant pupil.

That being said, there are many topics that are extremely relevant, such as war, family values, and civil liberties; these topics are illuminated by some great thinkers, such as Benjamin Franklin, Studs Terkel, and Gloria Steinem. There is also inclusion of some texts that you wouldn't think of as being centered around history or politics, such as an excerpt from "The Great Gatsby."

I haven't seen later editions, and I can only hope that they've improved upon this solid concept.

Focused on the topics needed by coaching, physical and health education, exercise science, sports medicine, and other health science students, without the complicated extraneous material found in other texts, this new edition has been substantially revised to meet the needs of the non-athletic training student. Instead of rehashing material from a comprehensive athletic training textbook, authors Marcia Anderson and Gail Parr provide a truly unique text that addresses the specific needs of students who will be expected to provide initial care to an injured athlete without immediate access to a certified athletic trainer. In addition to appropriately structuring the content for these non-athletic trainers, the authors also provide relevant pedagogical features for students to successfully understand and retain the material, including key terms, chapter objectives, and case study questions that require students to analyze a situation and determine the best course of action. Red Flags and Application Strategies further reinforce the real-world application of the material.

Perfect
By K. Mayo
This was a required text for Medical Injury/Emergency Management. The book scratched the surface on anatomy and common signs/symptoms for injuries. It was not overly technical and gave clear explanations. Illustrations, tables, and pictured examples gave a further understanding to what was being discussed in the text. Great for class, and also perfect for the layman that wants to get into first aid.

... taking in Sports Medicine and contains a lot of useful information. That being said
By Jess
This book was required for a class I was taking in Sports Medicine and contains a lot of useful information. That being said, if you're going to go beyond an introductory course in sports medicine, I would probably get a book that is a bit more dense-- this same information will probably appear in other books that you use throughout your studies, so it makes more sense (to me at least) to eliminate the cost of one book in favor of a more substantial book that will provide more detailed information to help you through your other classes.

Desert Solitaire: A Season in the Wilderness (Edward Abbey Collection), by Edward Abbey

First published in 1968, Desert Solitaire is one of Edward Abbey’s most critically acclaimed works and marks his first foray into the world of nonfiction writing. Written while Abbey was working as a ranger at Arches National Park outside of Moab, Utah, Desert Solitaire is a rare view of one man’s quest to experience nature in its purest form.

Through prose that is by turns passionate and poetic, Abbey reflects on the condition of our remaining wilderness and the future of a civilization that cannot reconcile itself to living in the natural world as well as his own internal struggle with morality. As the world continues its rapid development, Abbey’s cry to maintain the natural beauty of the West remains just as relevant today as when this book was written.

Amazon.com Review
With language as colorful as a Canyonlands sunset and a perspective as pointed as a prickly pear, Cactus Ed captures the heat, mystery, and surprising bounty of desert life. Desert Solitaire is a meditation on the stark landscapes of the red-rock West, a passionate vote for wilderness, and a howling lament for the commercialization of the American outback.

Review
"Like a ride on a bucking bronco . . . rough, tough, combative. The author is a rebel and an eloquent loner. His is a passionately felt, deeply poetic book . . . set down in a lean, racing prose, in a close-knit style of power and beauty." ---The New York Times Book Review

From the Publisher
The year before I began working at Random House, I took a roadtrip with a friend from college. One night we spent sleeping under the stars on the side of the road, about one-hundred feet from the edge of the Grand Canyon. That night has stayed present for me. And so when I saw the deep desert reds and the striking blue sky of the cover of DESERT SOLITAIRE sitting in the office, I had no choice but to pick it up. Riding through the insides of Manhattan, tunneling through to work, I have been carrying this book with me. I keep closing my eyes and hearing the wolf call, the swish of the wind through the brush and seeing the great vast distances, feeling the heat of the day on my skin and the dry cool descent of desert night. In reading this book I am coming to a whole new understanding of the ecology of the desert west. Edward Abbey went alone to the desert as a seeker of a greater knowledge of himself, but also to dwell in a nature unfiltered, unpersonified, on its own terms. The desert is bigger than any of us, filled with intimate moments. This book will take you there.

Beautifully Written, Enjoyable if the Bigotry doesn't Bother You
By txqueen
Edward Abbey writes beautifully about the Southwestern desert, and his love for it really comes through. This was not enough for me, however, to overcome the arrogance and bigotry that comes through. For example, he describes other tourists and campers in derogatory fashion; at one point, he makes fairly nasty critical remarks about a man who went hiking on a photography trip and died. Yet, in many examples in the book, he does foolish things while hiking. Why, when someone else does foolish things in the desert, they are stupid, and when he does, he is merely adventurous? He (appropriately) criticized a tourist for wanting a photo of a Navajo man, but later in the book, when he is drunk, he offensively describes himself as "drunk as a Navajo". He has sexist views towards women that are clear in the book. For example, he describes himself, when weeping, as "crying like a woman". These are just two examples of his not being as enlightened as he purports to be. I am glad that so many other reviewers found his work worthwhile. He is, indeed, a champion of the natural desert environment and it's flora and fauna, and has an important environmentalist and conservationist message. I could not get past his attitude and bigotry, however, so the book was not enjoyable enough for me to recommend it to someone else.

Being there...
By Conway
OK. To fully appreciate this accumulation of experiences and stories... you need to plan a trip to Southern Utah. ( Go during a "shoulder" season so you will not have too many crowds ). You really need to actually be there. To see the horizons and stirring landscapes. And you will need to let go of any preconceived attitudes about deserts - any requirements for 5-Star anything. Take this book along and read a few chapters each evening. And you will need to allow yourself enough time to just sit... listen.. and reflect. Visit Moab and the Arches N.P. and imagine how it once was not too long ago. Head off to Dead Horse Point and then down to the Needles area - both in Canyonlands N.P. If you can, camp for a night or two. Look for the La Sal Range on the eastern horizon. In this way, I think you will develop a better appreciation for Mr. Abbey's world. A couple of chapters might be considered a bit off point, but that's all part of the experience. So --- get the book, plan your adventure... and, if the Southwest is a new experience for you, I believe you will come back home with some remarkable impressions. All enhanced by "Desert Solitude".

Okay, sure, it was fun.
By rlamazon
Alright, it's a classic. But, as I had kind of picked up from others who have written about him, Abbey was kind of filled with himself. Although, the anti-establishment group from the 1960's is pretty well represented in this time capsule, I don't like running into smart-than-thou park rangers, so some of the passages kind of rubbed me wrong. As for adventures, mostly spurred by leaping before looking, and a kind of hippie approach to being in the West, it's a romp of sorts. The thirty plant names mentioned over and over and over will certainly be burned into your brain by the time you finish. lol. Is it okay to think a classic is just okay? For what it's worth, I started Stegner next and am finding him slightly oblique. I guess I just find the wonders of the West wonderful, without writing about them in a mysterious, transcendental way. Even Muir, in his Scottish, time-context sensitive prose could paint a pretty good picture without getting too circumlocutory.

Public Spaces, Private Gardens: A History of Designed Landscapes in New Orleans, by Lake Douglas

Landscape architect Lake Douglas employs written accounts, archival data, historic photographs, lithographs, maps, and city planning documents -- many of which have never before been published -- to explore public and private outdoor spaces in New Orleans and those who shaped them. The result offers the first in-depth examination of the city's landscape history.

Douglas presents this "beautiful and imposing" city as a work of art crafted by numerous influences. His survey from the colonial period to the twentieth century finds that geography, climate, and, above all, the multicultural character of its residents have made New Orleans unique in American landscape design history. French and Spanish settlers, Africans and Native Americans, as well as immigrants from Germany, Ireland, Italy, and other parts of the world all participated in creating this community's unique public and private landscapes. Places such as Congo Square, Audubon Park, the river levees, and "neutral grounds" -- local residents' own term for medians -- together with ordinary residential gardens are all testaments to the city's international imprint.

Douglas identifies five types of public and private designed landscapes in New Orleans: squares, linear open spaces, urban parks, commercial pleasure gardens, and domestic gardens. Discussing their design, function, and content, he shows how specific examples of each contribute to the city's unique character and also fit within the larger context of American landscape design history. Each type has its own complexion and reflects the influence of those who occupied it. Though New Orleanians lived in strata according to language, cultural identity, economics, and race, they found common ground, literally, in their community's landscapes.

Douglas's sweeping study, illustrated with over 90 color and black-and-white images, includes an exploration of archival horticultural books, almanacs, and periodicals; information about laborers who actually built landscapes; details of horticultural commerce, services, and marketing materials; and an exhaustive inventory of plants grown in New Orleans for agricultural, medicinal, and ornamental uses.

Public Spaces, Private Gardens provides an informative look at two hundred years of the designed landscapes and horticulture of New Orleans and a fresh perspective on one of America's most interesting and historic cities.

''Public Spaces, Private Gardens is a gold mine of research and cogent analysis of the landscape history of one of America's most culturally diverse cities. Lake Douglas's authoritative text covers city parks and open spaces as well as ornamental gardening, agriculture, and the slave trade, all illustrated with rare and evocative archival images.'' --Judith B. Tankard, author of Gardens of the Arts and Crafts Movement: Reality and Imagination

''More than just a description of the historical creation of gardens, this book provides the reader with an important background of the amazing history of the city with regard to immigration, racial and cultural practices, and the agricultural economy, all trends that shaped the creation and use of space and landscape in the city.'' --Material Culture

Review of "Public Spaces, Private Gardens"
By JACK D HOLDEN
This book has been sorely needed for decades. Lake Douglas has integrated garden design and horticulture in a carefully researched and written book.
For those of us interested in plants used in the early gardens of Louisiana, the book is especially welcomed. What a labor of love, thank you and kudos to
the author.

A Very Thorough Study!
By T. Garrett
It is a daunting study - very thorough. The book demands that readers have good eyesight because the print is of necessity very small to fit all that research into one book. The photos are also very small and do not show the lushness of our tropical materials. I love the inclusion of gardening and plant choice - New Orleans, Louisiana, is such a different area for growing compared with other portions of the United States. "Public Spaces" is exceedingly detailed and thus requires concentration to read and absorb.
