Introduction to submarine warfare

This is an introductory work to submarine warfare through WW2. The author discusses the origin of the submarine & early attempts to use them in combat. Concentrating on German, American, & British submarines, there is no discussion of the submarines of other nations involved in WW2 other than the Japanese midgets at Pearl Harbor. Information on the Italian midget subs would have been interesting. However, as an introduction to the subject of submarine warfare, the book accomplishes its purpose. Even though it is a summary, I learned several things about WW2.

There are a few photos and diagrams of the first submarine which gives an excellent illustration of what it looked like

Ryan Jenkins has certainly earned the title of being the authority on all things world war 2. If you continue to collect his work, you will be sure to have quite an impressive world war 2 archives. The book opens with an introduction to the rudimentary submarines of the past and my how far we have come. The facts revealed were quite intriguing especially when considering how they were first powered. There are a few photos and diagrams of the first submarine which gives an excellent illustration of what it looked like. There is even a small section which explains how submarines work, which is quite apt to be included in a book like this.The book then delves into how submarines factored into World War 1 and later World War 2, looking at the challenges and successes at the time. Real accounts of individuals who were aboard some these submarines are also included and it really gives a personal feel to the book rather than it just being a cold factual recounting of the events.
This is definitely an awesome book to read as it really shows how submarines affected the outcome of these wars which have impacted mankind's history so greatly. The account is very easy to follow and really pulls you in. Even though it is a short book, the details it supplies are amazing. Certainly a great read.

Learning about the oceans have always been interesting to me, so learning about the machinery used and how it's been used in the past is all a part of it. While learning machinery and such isn't really my favorite, this book makes it really easy to understand. The book keeps it simple and interesting, so no matter who's reading it, it's great for the basics and for those who have a hard time keeping focused on the subject. The book starts from square one about how submarines were created and used, so you're definitely getting everything about the history.
