I Love Hafiz!

This is the translation of Hafiz that you want! Paul Smith is a master craftsman in maintaining original rhythm, rhyme and structure of Hafiz. He could not do this unless he was a master poet himself and he is that most definitely. This is the best translation that I have experienced to date and I have read many because Hafiz has been close to my heart for a long long time (decades). Paul Smith's introduction and background information as well as glossary, notes and bibliography provide excellent tools in understanding this absolutely phenomenal mystic and poet If you want a better understanding of Hafiz and his indescribable Love look no further. You cannot go wrong with this edition. Paul Smith is prolific and an awesome poet/artist/mystic. His understanding, exhaustive research and sensitivity are a perfect match this unprecedented work. There is no other author who has brought so much mystic poetry to the west. It is my belief that Smith's work will open the eyes and hearts of many westerners to the love and humanity of the mid-east and beyond. Do yourself a favor and check out his many translations and other works. His own personal poetry is mystical, down to earth, modern and profound. Awesome! I am personally in his debt for this wonderful translation that has brought so much empathy to my heart.

wonderful translations of great souls of humanity

There is an entire section of the human experience unfortunately almost lost to most of us in "the West" in this our so tiredly polarized world, polarized along East-West lines. No longer East (USSR)-West (noncommunist countries), but East (Islam)-West (nonislamic countries). An entire Renaissance lost to modern experience. The "inner" Middle East - inner in both geographical and psychic meanings of that word - and the larger Eurasian landmass was home for almost a thousand years to thinkers, soulseekers, saints and holy fools, poets all, whom the rabid stereotyping in our modern world all but ignores and/or is ignorant of.

People have known a small piece, a very small piece, of Old Khayyam through Fitzgerald's admirable fantasia on that great Persian scientist - yes, scientist. More recently Rumi has been roped in by California zen as some generic pseudomysitcal dip into a watered down version of an anti-organized-religion quasireligion. Other than Rumi - and Rumi is, in my admittedly strong opinion, one of the blander representatives of these Eastern Renaissance souls - other than Rumi, an entire great literature, history, spirituality, shared human experience is denied us by the excessive and excessively biased representation of all the countries and their peoples past the eastern borders of Israel as rabid Islamic extremists, with no present and no past heights of soul, heart and mind. The equivalent would be (and maybe is) for "Easterners" to assume from the rabid politicoreligious extremism of Reagan and the Bushes that we never had Chaucer, Sir Thomas Browne, Alexander Pope, Samuel Johnson, Oliver Goldsmith, William Wordsworth, Shelley, Emily Bronte, John Stuart Mill, Thoreau, Tennyson, Emily Dickinson, Yeats, Sylvia Plath - and that's only in the English tradition, not even mentioning the Europeans who are unfortunately or not usually classified as "Western."

People have heard rumors and some free adaptations of someone called Hafiz, adaptations which usually present him as some selfprofessedly frivolous winedrunk soul (or is it womandrunk, or is it Goddrunk?). Hafiz, to put it bluntly, is not Hafiz. That people in the West do not dive into Hafiz as deeply as into their favorite Western writer lessens our lives. And Kabir. And Sadi. And 'Attar. And dozens of others.

Paul Smith has translated it seems close to a hundred books (or more) from the highly poetic languages of the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent. Individual authors are represented in almost always complete works - which avoids the personal biases of the selective translators, who in my experience select - and translate - either to show how a foreign author "matches" our own way of feeling, or to show how a foreign author "challenges" our own way of feeling; such translations become, even in good intention, more a reflection of the translator's way of feeling than of the author translated. Paul Smith has also appended studies of these great writers to individual volumes of their works, and in stand-alone volumes such as this remarkable three volume work on the Life and Times of the Great Hafiz. He has translated both female as well as male poet-philosophers from these magical but also very real times. And he has also put together anthologies so an interested reader (in California I would probably write "interested seeker") can get a taste and then read the complete works of a soul that particularly appeals.

As well, he has made these volumes available in criminally inexpensive ebook formats, out of a passionate conviction to, bluntly, save trees. And for traditionalists, the print copies are hardly costly considering the completeness of what's in the covers.

I am as is obvious too old to hide my hobbyhorses, and one thing I lament, detest, and outrightly laugh at is the stereotyping discounting of an entire large segment of humanity, and we are lesser for it. Because of understandably thorny (but not insurmountable) political friction between - how I hate the use of the word "between" concerning human beings! - between the supposed West and the supposed East - the supposed democratic erstwhile Christian West and the supposedly monolithic Islamic supposedly ubiquitously terrorist Middle East and Eurasia, the world of the souls, hearts, and minds of both those in the West and in the East lose by refusing to look past politicians and into other pastimes of people such as putting our thoughts, feelings, desires, fears and laughter down on paper to delight and move and elevate posterity.

The thinkers, writers, poets Paul Smith has made available through what I would say is an almost superhuman and definitely altruistic effort are a corrective to our shrinking contact with others even as our world, as the cliche is, supposedly shrinks. They are us and we are them.

I will end this rather long and probably overly preachy comment by saying one thing these writers show is an absolutely incredible sense of humor at the base of this other tradition, and when such deep and at the same time accessible humor is apparent, it drives home - again - that we are, after all, all the same.

Valiant effort marred by poor fomatting

A valiant effort to translate the entire Divan, but the Kindle version has typos and is poorly formatted. Every ghazal is run together into a single stream of centered text, so there are no line breaks visible. The translator's attempt to produce rhymed lines (of doubtful value in itself) is therefore wasted. Notes to the ghazals are all in one place and not hyper-linked to the relevant ghazal, which isn't much use. The Kindle version needs major reformatting. Some more scholarly references for the sources of the material in the Introduction and Notes would also be useful.

The book I needed in high school

It happens to most students at some point during their academic careers. For some reason, nothing just seems to stick. Perhaps it's dealing with a particular subject matter. Perhaps it's with nearly every subject, but putting in the time studying yields little results. It may not be the quantity of studying but the quality of studying. In the book "101 Ways to Make Studying Easier and Faster for High School Students" author Janet Engle, offers a number of practical tips to help students use their study time more effectively.

While most general study tips guides have a number of general rules that apply to studying subject matters in general, Engle goes much further than those traditional approaches. She offers study tips unique to every major subject. This can be crucially important to students who find themselves struggling in specific subject matters.

In the foreign language chapter for example, Engle suggests students struggling to learn grammatical concepts such as conjugations not rely on conjugation lists and other such tools. Rather, she suggests it may be more effective to write a sentence using each verb form. This will allow the student to think of the verb in its natural setting.

One of the tips in the math section encourages students to show their own work after every problem. Engle notes this is critical both for the student and the teacher. If a student is having trouble understanding a concept, an instructor is better able to help the student if each step used to arrive at the final answer is chronicled. Studying does not help if errors are not able to be rectified.

In addition to the specific tips in each subject matter, Engle gives reasons why students need to study certain subjects and what the long-term benefits and uses are. In doing this, Engle shows a good understanding of one of the biggest study problems high school students - motivation. If students don't see a practical application for their efforts, they will be less likely to give 100 percent. Engle seeks to answer the argument, "I'm never going to use this stuff!" before it is ever offered.

In addition to the tips that cover most major subjects, there are other attractive qualities to Engle's book as well. She never talks down to students, but always try to encourage, even when correcting bad habits. "Do not let a temporary situation become a permanent excuse for not reaching your goals," she exhorts. No detail is overlooked in the production quality of the book as well. The college-type font at the beginning of each chapter and with each subhead, no doubt, will serve to remind many high school students what the ultimate goal is.

While the title of the book suggests there are 101 tips, Engle actually provides many more than that. Many are listed as "sub-tips" to the main points. In some ways, the title of Engle's work actually sells the book short. Students, or parents, who purchase this book are getting way more than their money's worth. They may be getting an entire future.

Great Book

I remember the difficulty I had studying as a high school student and now that I am a parent I worry about children's experiences. 101 Ways To Make Studying Easier and Faster for High School Students was able to alleviate many of those fears with the easy to follow instructions and in-depth reports about study habits and memorization. I can guarantee my incoming freshman will go to school already having read this book.

Science and mathematics can be a difficult for may students to master, but the author helps people get figure out their own pace and skills and to work with them instead of against them. She also delves into the psychology of studying and how a student perceives the subject and his abilities can have a major impact on how he learns.

The book delves extensively into the individual subjects and how to best approach them. She also examines subjects outside of the main curriculum including music and drama. I have read few books on studying that have gone beyond the reading, writing and arithmetic. For a change, 101 Ways To Make Studying Easier and Faster for High School Students teaches is about the student and not standardized test scores. I give it four stars.

Fabulous How To Guide for High School Students Who Struggle With Study Skills

101 Ways To Make Studying Easier and Faster for High School Students is an excellent overall "how-to" study guide for high school students. Parents should pick up a copy for their soon-to-be freshmen or students struggling with poor grades. Her book could also cross over to college students.

The author presents her information in an easy-to-read format. She delves into unique study approaches such as how to memorize foreign language vocabulary and how to use mnemonic devices to learn difficult science concepts. Her chapters about language arts and how to write term paper/essays were very informative.

I also liked how she incorporated study tips for creative/artistic subjects such as music and drama. This book is more than just a study guide: the author incorporates tips about organization, project/time management, and how to approach learning with a positive attitude. This book makes a great guide for high school students who want to tackle a new approach to studying. I rate this book a five out of five stars.

Every step Liv takes to elude her unwanted protector takes her closer to the man who calls himself Stealth

This book literally starts us out on a wild ride. Liv and Ari, two students who attend the exclusive school, Sidley, saunter through Boston’s Back Bay streets, stopping only to buy gelatos from a street vendor and rescue a stray puppy. A van pulls up for a fleeting moment. When it pulls away on squealing tires, Ari and the puppy are gone. “Ariel Kelly!” Liv screeches in panic searching for her friend. “Stop hiding. This isn’t funny.” And she’s right—there’s nothing funny in kidnapping, especially when Liv confirms the act by finding Ari’s purple beret on the street, grimy with tire tracks. Ari is kidnap victim number three and Liv’s scared!

Thus begins the YA Thriller, Stealth Moves, no ordinary crime/kidnapping story, with not a speck of predictable characters. And no tired, worn out PI hot on the trail either. In Stealth Moves, Sanna Hines seems to have chartered her own circuitous territory with atypical twists and turns. What you see in the average thriller might be wrapped around what you get. But not this time. What we’re presented with is a riddle wrapped in an enigma. Here Sidley students from wealthy Boston families, appear to be targets for kidnappers seeking huge ransom payoffs.
Or not.
Hines has devised a devilishly clever set of interweaving plot turns, both unique and surprising that offer unusual characters like the twins, Stealth and Brandon—definitely not the men they seem. “It’s complicated,” says another character. “You call him Brent, but Stealth hates that name.” Brent/Brandon/Stealth? What we do know is it can be dangerous to push one of them too far.
A handful of others intertwine in this complex story: Dan Vogel, a tough Boston police officer, Mike Smallwood, Liv’s uncle and Cameron, the guy that knows Parkour, a military obstacle course training that comes in handy. But best of all is Holly Glasscock, a 22 year old college grad who starts out without a job or a plan, but ends up risking her life to save others. Besides her martial arts skills, she proves herself worthy of praise as a bodyguard protecting Liv. It’s not the easiest assignment.

Author Hines has maneuvered the reader of this fascinating book in a guessing game that goes on until at last we finally breathe a sigh of relief.

Couldn't Turn the Pages Fast Enough---A Great Read

Author Sanna Hines delivers a real page turner. Set among Boston's chic Beacon Hill and Back Bay, Stealth Moves is a fast-paced thriller. Hines has created a uniquely creepy villain, Stealth, a man possessed by his past and confounded by his present circumstances that include a grotesque mother appropriately named the 'Momster'. His complex personality keep the reader guessing at every turn.
Those in Stealth's sights include a gaggle of students at the prestigious Sidley School, including Olivia Smallwood, a likable young woman whose witness to a kidnapping of a popular girl propels here into the school's 'in-crowd'. The threat to Olivia launches the story's protagonist into action. Holly Glasscock is a young woman with ambitions to join the Boston police force. Her hiring on as Olivia's bodyguard gives her the chance to prove herself and to make the dream come true. She not only finds deadly adventures, she also may have found romance among two handsome suitors.
When kidnapping turns into death, the story accelerates, a real race against time. At risk, other kidnapped students as well as Olivia herself. The threat and tension mount as we see more of what Stealth is capable of.
Hines' well-crafted tale will appeal to Young Adult audiences with its hip and beautiful high school cast of characters, the target of Stealth's stalking. In addition, the expertly written book will appeal to adults looking for a thriller filled with interesting characters of all ages, plot twists and non-stop tension. Hines' rich descriptions of Boston, its public gardens and stately private homes, are an added bonus.

A Triller That Keeps Ones Heart Racing

The first page of this novel drew me with the kidnaping of Liv Smallwood’s schoolmate. She could not believe that something like that would actually happen to someone she knew. Liv decided she owed it to her classmate to find her. Meanwhile, her grandmother with whom Liv lived, worried about her safety due to the kidnaping and hired a body guard, Holly Glasscock, to protect her granddaughter.

Little did Holly realize how difficult this task would be due to Liv’s strong will and determination to live her life freely.

In between the goings on, Liv also tried to help her friend, Stealth heal after the death of his twin bother.

I did not anticipate the twist at the end of the book. Throughout, my heart raced and my adrenalin flowed. Every chapter had a surprise that drew me in deeper into the storyline. I cared about these people who became real to me. Constant action did not let up and brought new surprises to Liv’s never ending quest to find her classmate and to slip away from her body guard.

I recommend and encourage folks to discover the wit, charm, quick and snappy dialogue, humor and writing style that keeps a reader anxious to return to the book. My fingers could not turn the pages faster. Terrific story. I am being very careful not to be a “spoiler” for other readers and suggest they curl up this week-end with “Stealth Moves”.

Freddie Fresh's photo appears on the inner sleeve of Boogie Down Productions' first album, so he's no new jack. This latest revision of his invaluable book defies all expectations. The attention to detail and the uncovering of lost classics on impossibly obscure labels, some of which existed to release a single 12", is a labor of love. It is impossible to withold admiration for someone who actually cares profoundly about the *history* of hip-hop. Not only did this book require the patience of a saint to assemble (witness the hundreds of inner label scans/photos), but it also brings to light how easily the complex histories of African-American musical culture might be lost altogether. Freddie is one person who will simply not allow that to happen. A book of staggering proportions *and* one that will be of interest even to those who aren't hip-hop heads given its exploration of the minutiae of an art form that has altered American life from the late 20th century onwards.

Incredible!!

This book is beyond belief! Anyone who considers themself an old-school hip-hop head HAS to have this. Just in flipping through the pages I am amazed at the detail of all the information presented. Case in point, I was part of a group that made a record back in 1983. I totally lost track of not only the record, but the rest of the guys in the group( Rickey G & the Everloving 5). I have searched all over the internet, ebay.. everywhere I could think of and I never found any information about this record. Yet here it's not only listed, but the actual Label from the record is shown as well. In addition the comments mention that it was Rahzel's (from the Roots) first record. How could he have known that??? Incredible!

I love this book... I always knew there were alot of independent hip-hop records in the 80's but when I read this book and saw all the detailed and numerous listings it was like someone had punch me in the face...wow! I never expected it to be this much... Freddy Fresh deserves much respect for preserving this invaluable info and keeping old school hip-hop alive!...

The best book on self-control thus far, by the man who started it all.

The Marshmallow Test by Walter Mischel, the man who started it all, is a book on self-control, probably the best one on the subject thus far. This book is everything that the currently leading book on the subject (Willpower by Baumeister and Tierney) is not: intellectually coherent, scientifically sophisticated, and concerned more about sound reasoning than about sound bites.

Research on self-control was probably started in earnest in the 1960s with Walter Mischel's celebrated "Marshmallow Test". Children around the age of five were given a choice between one marshmallow now or two marshmallows later, a delay lasting up to 20 minutes. While some ate the marshmallow right away, others used different strategies to control themselves such as averting their gaze, pulling their hair, squirming, closing their eyes or just sniffing the marshmallow and putting it back. The implications of this research came to life when researchers went back to the same children several years later. They found children who exercised self-control and waited 15 or 20 minutes to double their payoff had higher grade point averages, made more money and were fitter (as measured by BMI) when they were adults.

Genetics clearly plays a role in the level of self-control one has. The message of the book is that genetics is not destiny. Willpower is a cognitive ability and, because our brains are much more plastic than had been imagined in the past, we can substantially increase this crucial ability to control ourselves. This book shows how to gain more self-control.

Paralleling Daniel Kahneman's model of "fast" and "slow" thinking, Mischel describes two systems in the brain: "hot" (limbic) and "cold" (prefrontal cortex). The hot system deals with immediate rewards and threats while the cold system deals with delayed consequences. The key to self-control is cooling the hot system where appropriate. We need to learn to activate our prefrontal cortex first before the limbic system kicks in.

Can we actually increase our self-control? Mischel's response is yes, if you believe you can and if you really want to. In other words, you can increase your self-control if you approach it with a mindset that believes that increasing self-control is possible as opposed to a helpless mindset that believes willpower is a limited resource over which you have no control. But just having the right mindset may not be enough. We need strategies to cool our warm system.

Commonly used strategies for self-control often include removing the source of temptations (don't have junk foods around, if you are trying to eat healthy) or surrounding yourself with people who do not eat junk food. But these strategies are likely to fail without effective pre-commitment. You can remove all cigarettes from sight and yet mooch them from others. You can clear junk food from the kitchen and yet help yourself to sugar-laden cookies in business meetings. Mischel suggests that we should use more robust strategies based on research. Some such strategies are:

* MAKE UP "IF...THEN" RULES. We tend to react to cues out of habit. Create new habits with new cues. IF I go to a restaurant, THEN I will start my meal with a salad. IF I get an email notification, THEN I will finish the next item on my to-do list before reading the email. When well-rehearsed and practiced, the desired behavior is triggered automatically without effort.

* COOL THE NOW, HEAT THE LATER. Vividly imagine the negative consequences of immediate gratification: Whenever you are tempted to smoke, visualize the picture of a cancerous lung. If you are tempted overeat, visualize the picture of a person who is unfit and out of shape.

* DISTANCE YOURSELF FROM THE SITUATION. Refer to yourself in the third person. Instead of saying "I've to finish the report by tomorrow", I can say "Chuck has to finish the report by tomorrow." This way you distance yourself and change your role to that of an observer. This makes the completion of the task easier.

* SHIFT YOUR FOCUS FROM HOT TO COOL PROPERTIES. Shift your attention from the hot to the not-so-hot attributes of the stimulus: Instead of looking at the chocolate as a tasty flavorful treat look at it as a brown square, wrapped in paper. By focusing your attention on the on the cool attributes of a stimulus, we can decrease its appeal.

What about all that talk we hear about willpower being a limited resource, the mysterious "ego energy" - whatever that is - being "depleted" fast dragging your willpower along with it (which you can apparently restore with the help of glucose) and the oft-quoted generalization that "willpower is like a muscle"? Mischel wisely ignores such half-baked and sound bite oriented interpretation of research data by Baumeister and associates and gently points to the work done by Carol Dweck of Stanford University, which suggests self-control is not a limited resource and one's mindset can affect one's level of self-control.

While the book summarizes relevant research leading to its conclusions, it is much more than that. It is part a self-help book and part a look back at the work of an eminent psychologist who, at 84 years age, has chosen to share his wisdom gained through a lifetime of research in his first-ever nonacademic book. A man with nothing prove after 55 years in the academe and over 200 publications to his credit, Walter Mischel wears his wisdom lightly. He says in the introduction that he imagined himself "having a leisurely conversation with you, the reader". What a conversation it is!

Interesting Read, but Potentially Misleading

Mischel is a gifted researcher and writer. His book masterfully summarizes a long line of research on self-control and motivation that, as a school psychologist, I have been fascinated with for some time. Thankfully, Mischel is able to step outside the academic stodginess of research articles to tell the stories behind them. However, I think many readers will be disappointed by Mischel's discussion of the implications of this research because he ultimately ends with what I would call "evidence-based platitudes." His recommendations for helping children develop self-control consist of strategies that virtually every reader would have presupposed. Namely, reward effort (not outcomes), be consistent, and be a good role model. If you are looking for a life-altering read, these "insights" are likely to disappoint (judging from the more critical reviews here on Amazon).

But the reason I give the book three stars (despite the engaging writing) is that in several sections throughout the book Mischel seems to suggest that research-informed self-control training can only be found in programs like KIPP charter schools. In truth, these insights have been discussed in the educational literature for a very long time, and I sincerely doubt that there is a teacher education program anywhere that does not train these strategies. The implementation, however, varies as a function of local resources and parent support (two things that KIPP definitely has going for it). In another example, Mischel highlights a specific study on computer-based cognitive training, even though meta-analyses of this literature suggests that it is, at best, minimally effective in immediate, near-transfer learning tasks (no benefit for delayed, near- or far-transfer tasks). I'm sure many readers will read this section and come away with the impression that cognitive training is the wave of the future (it's not).

In short, Mischel relies heavily on anecdotes to tell his stories, and the selection of these anecdotes inescapably creates subtle and unfortunate spin that folks unfamiliar with the literature could easily misinterpret.

Dr. Walter Mischel administered "The Marshmallow Test," to young children at Standford University's Bing Nursery School in the 1960s. This study showed that even four and five year olds are capable of delaying gratification. What no one could have predicted is that many children who successfully resisted eating a tempting treat (in order to receive a greater reward later) carried this trait with them into later life. In this work of non-fiction, Mischel, who has a PhD in clinical psychology and has taught at Harvard, Stanford, and Columbia University, explores the concept of self-control in depth and explains how we can use cognitive skills to cool down our "hot impulses." By doing so, we may empower ourselves to make more constructive decisions.

Mischel draws on decades of studies that shed light on "who we are; what we can be; how our minds work; how we can--and can't--control our impulses, emotions, and dispositions; how we can change; and how we can raise and educate our children." The author asks: Can we reduce the number of school dropouts? Stick to weight-loss and exercise regimens? Save more for our retirement? Create educational programs that will build character and help our kids succeed in their professional and personal lives? Unfortunately, helping people do the right thing (provided we even know what the right thing is) is not easy; many of us procrastinate, rationalize, and have difficulty staying motivated. Common sense is uncommon, and few people are consistently prudent in every area of their lives. However, trying to use proper cognitive skills to achieve important goals often pays rich dividends

The book's conversational style, humane and compassionate message, and entertaining anecdotes make it a pleasure to read. Dr. Mischel does not talk down to us as he addresses questions that many people are curious about, such as "Is self-control prewired?" Although he does not presume to have all the answers--after all, our knowledge of how the human mind works is far from complete--Mischel gives us the benefit of years of experience at looking into the practical implications (positive and negative) of impulse control. By keeping our emotions from always getting the better of us--by employing "strategies and insights, as well as goals and motivation"--Mischel suggests that we are more likely to live happier, healthier, and more fulfilling lives.

An excellent read

I'm not much of a reader of novels and I read this one mostly to keep up my Italian, but I ended up being captivated by it. At the start of the story, a servant woman has died and, as the novel progresses, we learn more and more about her life, and about the family for whom she worked, with the details slowly uncovered as in a mystery novel in which the detective slowly uncovers the facts of a crime. In the process, we learn much about life in a small Sicilian city though a very large cast of characters, both of the upper class and the servant and worker class, and about the relationships among them. The writing is very attractive and the pacing of the story very well done. The author's prose style is quite straightforward but she uses an extensive vocabulary, so the book is intended for an Italian audience, not language students. A notable feature of her writing is the very natural flow of the considerable amount of dialogue; she seems to capture well the sound of speech (though the characters would have mostly been speaking Sicilian, rather than Italian as in the book).

A modern twist on Maori mythologies!

Makareti puts a modern spin on mythologies that are big in Pacific culture, specifically Maori culture. For example, myths about creation and the different Gods that we praise and give credit for the life we live today, she puts in modern contexts and modern stories -in turn making it easier for today's generation/those not familiar with these myths, to understand the stories. The cover may look scary at first look, but brings everything about Pacific culture and the myths, Gods, Goddesses, and everything that's important to us, onto one cover picture. While reading this story, you don't realize that you're reading about myths, because the stories are put into the context in an amazing and flawless way, it comes off as if you're reading short stories written by anyone. The indicator, however, that it is indeed of Pacific origin are the names she uses, the actions of the characters, and some of the feel of the stories. This is a MUST READ for anyone who loves stories and living through fiction. Also especially those who live in the Pacific or are interested in our culture. Shes an amazing author and these are great stories, all in all.
