An excellent read

I'm not much of a reader of novels and I read this one mostly to keep up my Italian, but I ended up being captivated by it. At the start of the story, a servant woman has died and, as the novel progresses, we learn more and more about her life, and about the family for whom she worked, with the details slowly uncovered as in a mystery novel in which the detective slowly uncovers the facts of a crime. In the process, we learn much about life in a small Sicilian city though a very large cast of characters, both of the upper class and the servant and worker class, and about the relationships among them. The writing is very attractive and the pacing of the story very well done. The author's prose style is quite straightforward but she uses an extensive vocabulary, so the book is intended for an Italian audience, not language students. A notable feature of her writing is the very natural flow of the considerable amount of dialogue; she seems to capture well the sound of speech (though the characters would have mostly been speaking Sicilian, rather than Italian as in the book).

Wonderful story! If you have been to Sicily it will take you back! If you haven't been there, it make you want to go!
I just wish I could get the Italian edition. She has a magical writing style, and keeps you wondering what will come next. Presents an authentic insight into the Sicilian persona. A great read.
